Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs

I see there is increased security on the Air Force Base. Would I be able to make a reservation for the planetarium and then be able to go take a photo of the chapel? I know it is closed for renovations would just like to see it. I also see that we have to email in advance for the planetarium. We will be visiting family in Denver and are going to pikes Peak and Colorado Springs is right on the way. Thanks for all your help.

The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs is open to visitors, but security protocols are strict due to it being an active military installation. Here’s how your visit can work based on current practices.

Planetarium Visits

The planetarium is available to the public, but as you mentioned, reservations are required in advance. Typically, you need to email the planetarium staff to request a time slot. Make sure to include the number of visitors in your party and your planned arrival time. Once confirmed, you’ll receive instructions on how to access the facility on the day of your visit.

  • Email the planetarium in advance to secure your spot.
  • Bring a valid photo ID for all adults in your group.
  • Arrive at the designated visitor entrance; there will be a security checkpoint where you will show your confirmation and IDs.

Chapel and Photography

The Cadet Chapel is one of the most iconic sites on the Academy grounds. Even though it may be closed for renovations inside, you can usually view and photograph it from the exterior. Public access is typically limited to designated areas along the main visitor path.

  • You cannot freely walk around the base; follow signage and staff directions.
  • Photography is generally allowed from public or visitor-designated areas, but drones and tripod setups are prohibited.
  • Check if the chapel exterior is open for viewing on your intended day of visit, as some renovations may limit access even outside.

Visitor Tips

  • Plan at least 1–2 hours for the planetarium and chapel area together.
  • Combine your visit with a drive through the Academy’s scenic areas if time permits, such as the visitor center loop.
  • Arrive early and bring water, especially if visiting during warm months, as parking may be a short walk from the main visitor checkpoints.

In summary, you can absolutely reserve a planetarium visit and see the Cadet Chapel exterior. Make sure to coordinate your reservation, arrive prepared with IDs, and follow security and access instructions. This way, your visit will be smooth and safe while enjoying the highlights of the Air Force Academy on your way from Denver to Pikes Peak.
