Sunset time
My husband and I want to enjoy the sunset at the S Rim by El Tovar. If the sunsets at 6:20 how far in advance do we need to be sitting at the rim to enjoy the sunset?
To fully enjoy the sunset at the South Rim near El Tovar, it’s best to plan ahead. The Grand Canyon is a popular spot for sunset viewing, and even late in the day, crowds can gather quickly at the rim.
Timing Recommendations:
- Arrive at least 30–45 minutes before the official sunset time. If the sunset is at 6:20 pm, plan to be seated and ready by 5:35–5:50 pm.
- This gives you time to find a good viewing spot, set up chairs or blankets if needed, and enjoy the changing colors as the sun approaches the horizon.
- Remember that the Grand Canyon’s colors start changing noticeably even before the sun touches the horizon, so being early enhances the experience.
Additional Tips:
- Check the weather forecast—clouds can affect visibility and lighting, but partial clouds can also create spectacular color effects.
- Bring layers; even in fall, temperatures can drop quickly near sunset.
- Consider walking along the Rim Trail slightly away from the busiest area by El Tovar if you prefer a quieter experience.
- Have a camera ready, but take time to simply enjoy the view—it’s a short, magical moment that passes quickly.
By arriving 30–45 minutes in advance, you’ll maximize your chance of a peaceful and memorable sunset experience at the South Rim.
