Birthday Dinner
Hi,
Coming in October from Chicago with 4 other couples to celebrate my husband's birthday. We are staying in La Jolla and looking for a good restaurant with fun vibe to celebrate.
Some suggestions I've received are Javier's, Puesto, and Piatti We are fine with San Diego Location too. Look forward to hearing opinions. Thanks
For a birthday celebration with a group of 10 in La Jolla or greater San Diego, you have some excellent choices. Based on your suggestions and the type of experience you’re looking for, here are some detailed recommendations:
La Jolla Options:
- Javier’s – Known for its upscale Mexican cuisine, fun and lively atmosphere, and strong cocktails. Great for groups celebrating a special occasion. The decor is festive, with a classic hacienda vibe. Reservations are highly recommended for a group of your size.
- Puesto – Modern Mexican tacos and small plates with a colorful, casual, and upbeat environment. Outdoor seating is lovely if the weather is good, and it has a fun, energetic vibe without being too loud. It’s more casual than Javier’s but still celebratory.
- Piatti – Italian fare in a cozy but elegant setting. Excellent pasta, pizzas, and seafood. The ambiance is more refined and romantic, so it’s perfect if you want a slightly quieter, upscale celebration without the festive Mexican flair.
Other San Diego Options:
- Born and Raised (Downtown Gaslamp) – A high-end steakhouse with dramatic décor, large booths, and an energetic vibe. Excellent for a birthday group looking to dress up a bit.
- The Prado at Balboa Park – Located inside the park with a stylish, historic setting. Great for groups, with a menu of American cuisine with Mediterranean touches. Indoor and patio seating both have charm.
- Herringbone (La Jolla or Downtown) – Seafood-centric with a lively, trendy environment, especially in the evening. Great for cocktails and shared plates.
Tips for Booking:
- Reserve as early as possible for a group of 10, especially on weekends in October.
- Ask if the restaurant can accommodate a special birthday dessert or toast; many will provide a complimentary gesture if notified in advance.
- Consider whether you want a lively party atmosphere versus a more elegant dining experience; this will help decide between Mexican, Italian, or steak/seafood venues.
In summary, for a fun, festive celebration, Javier’s and Puesto are top picks in La Jolla, with Javier’s skewing a bit more upscale and Puesto more casual and playful. If you’re willing to drive into downtown San Diego, Born and Raised or Herringbone offer lively settings with great food and cocktails. Piatti or The Prado are excellent if you prefer a more refined, relaxed vibe while still enjoying a memorable birthday dinner.
