Amtrak

I haven’t taken the Amtrak in years. What’s the best way to get to and from Union station to Magnificent Mile hotel area? Ride share or taxi? Thank you

Getting from Chicago’s Union Station to the Magnificent Mile area is fairly straightforward, and you have a few good options depending on convenience, cost, and comfort. Union Station is located in the West Loop area, roughly 1.5–2 miles southwest of the heart of the Magnificent Mile, so travel times are generally short unless traffic is heavy.

Here are your main options:

  • Ride Share (Uber/Lyft): This is one of the most convenient options. You can request a car right from the station, and the trip typically takes 10–15 minutes depending on traffic. Fares are usually around $12–$20 depending on the time of day and demand.
  • Taxi: There is a taxi stand directly outside Union Station. Taxis are reliable and slightly more predictable in price than ride shares, though fares are usually in the same $15–$25 range. Expect a tip of around 15–20%.
  • CTA Train (Subway): If you prefer public transit, you can take the CTA Red Line from nearby LaSalle station (a short walk from Union Station) north to the Chicago station stop. From there, it’s a short walk east to the Magnificent Mile. This option is much cheaper (around $2.50 per person) but involves walking and stairs.
  • Bus: Less commonly used for tourists, there are several CTA bus routes that connect Union Station to the Michigan Avenue area. This is economical but slower and less convenient with luggage.

For most visitors, especially with luggage, ride share or taxi is the easiest and fastest choice. If you are traveling light and are comfortable navigating public transit, the Red Line offers an inexpensive alternative with minimal walking.

Tip: During rush hours (morning 7–9am and evening 4–6pm), traffic can add a few extra minutes, so plan accordingly if you have reservations or appointments along the Magnificent Mile.
