Restaurant questions

Our annual new years week trip while months away has entered my mind and of course Dining for the week as well. We have been coming for 35 plus years and have many favorites and also like trying some new options. 5 nights wife , me adult daughter and husband staying at gardens hotel 5 nights .

Only for sure dinners are Lola’s and Lbackyard .

Questions : has off the hook closed for good and/or are the ladies reopening something else? Is the new in town square grouper open yet and do they take reservations ? Has anyone done the southern hour at cafe marquesa? And while I have not eaten at Milagros I understand it’s moving closer to our hotel?

Looking for thoughts on these and any other new or old school options I have not heard of ( or have forgotten lol) thanks

It sounds like you have a fantastic trip to Key West planned for New Year’s week, and it’s great that you’re already thinking about dining options! Let’s address your questions one by one and give you some updated information on some of the restaurants you're curious about, as well as a few other suggestions that might fit your taste.

  • Off the Hook – Has it closed for good?

Yes, unfortunately, Off the Hook has permanently closed. The beloved ladies behind the restaurant have not yet reopened anywhere else in Key West. They had been a favorite for many years, so it’s sad to see them go. However, there are still plenty of great dining options to try in the area!

  • Square Grouper – Is it open, and do they take reservations?

The new Square Grouper in Key West has opened its doors! It’s a more upscale, stylish spot offering seafood with a bit of a modern twist. As for reservations, yes, they do take reservations, and it’s highly recommended, especially for dinners during peak times like New Year’s week. The restaurant has already gained popularity, so it can fill up quickly.

  • Southern Hour at Café Marquesa – Have you tried it?

The Southern Hour at Café Marquesa is a great experience, especially if you’re looking for a fun, vibrant dining atmosphere. The Southern Hour is a weekly cocktail and appetizer event offered at Café Marquesa, where you can enjoy a range of drinks and small bites, all while soaking in the ambiance. It’s a great option for a pre-dinner drink or an early evening outing. It’s not a formal dinner setting, but definitely worth trying for a relaxed and lively evening.

  • Milagro’s – Is it moving closer to your hotel?

Yes, Milagro’s is moving! They are relocating to a new, larger space that’s much closer to your hotel, so this should be a convenient option for you. Milagro’s has been a local favorite for years, known for its Mexican cuisine and laid-back vibe. Their new location should make it even more accessible, and you’ll still get the same great food and friendly service you’re used to.

As for other recommendations, here are a few new and old-school dining spots in Key West that you might not have heard of or might want to revisit:

  • The Flaming Buoy Filet Co.: A newer addition to the Key West dining scene, The Flaming Buoy offers a cozy atmosphere and a creative menu. It’s known for excellent seafood dishes and an intimate setting. A great spot for a romantic dinner or a special night out with your family.
  • Blue Heaven: This is one of the most iconic spots in Key West, famous for its quirky atmosphere and delicious Key West cuisine. Located in a large, outdoor courtyard with roosters running around, it’s a fun, laid-back place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Be sure to try the lobster Benedict or the fried chicken.
  • The Half Shell Raw Bar: A local favorite for fresh oysters and seafood, this spot offers casual dining with waterfront views. It’s a great place to grab a quick bite and enjoy the laid-back Key West vibe.
  • Latitudes (on Sunset Key): If you’re looking for something special, take the short ferry ride over to Sunset Key and dine at Latitudes. Known for its beautiful setting on the water, it’s a perfect spot for a sunset dinner. The food is upscale, and the experience is unforgettable.
  • Kelly’s Caribbean Bar Grill and Brewery: A Key West classic that’s great for casual dining, with a wide selection of drinks, seafood, and American fare. It’s located right on Whitehead Street, so it’s easy to pop by for a relaxed meal or a drink in the evening.
