Shaolin Temple Songshan Scenic Area planning help please
How long do i need to see Shaolin temple and pagoda forest please? If i take the right cable car “Cable car to SanHuangZhai”. (return ride). The cable car takes you up to the top of the mountain but will i have reached the wooden posted paths when i get off the cable car? If I only want to spend 30 minutes up there can i see the suspension bridge or anything? how long and harder walk is it to see the monastery please? If I go to monastery what else is up there (any toilets) and how long do i need up there please? I am going at the start of November could it be frosty/very cold? thank you
Visiting the Shaolin Temple and the surrounding Songshan Scenic Area can vary in time depending on what you want to see, your pace, and whether you use the cable car to reach SanHuangZhai.
For the Shaolin Temple and Pagoda Forest:
- Most visitors spend around 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the main temple complex and the Pagoda Forest. This allows time to see the main halls, practice areas, and the historic pagodas at a relaxed pace.
- The monastery is generally easy to walk around, with paved paths and some stairs, suitable for most fitness levels. Toilets are available within the temple grounds.
For the cable car to SanHuangZhai:
- The cable car takes you to the top of the mountain quickly, saving a strenuous climb. However, when you get off, you are at the top, but not directly on all the wooden posted paths. Some areas, like the suspension bridge and cliff paths, require a short but steeper walk from the cable car exit.
- If you only have 30 minutes at the top, it is possible to see the suspension bridge and enjoy a quick scenic walk, but you won’t have time to fully explore all the trails. Focus on the main viewpoint near the cable car station.
- For a more comprehensive walk, including SanHuangZhai’s cliffside paths and wooden walkways, plan at least 1.5 to 2 hours, especially if you include the return cable car ride.
Weather considerations in early November:
- Temperatures at the start of November can be chilly, particularly in the morning and on higher elevations like SanHuangZhai. Expect temperatures ranging from 5–15°C (41–59°F).
- It could be frosty in the early morning, especially on exposed paths at higher altitudes, so dress in layers and bring a warm jacket.
Summary recommendations:
- Shaolin Temple + Pagoda Forest: 1.5–2 hours.
- SanHuangZhai via cable car: minimum 30 minutes for a quick visit, 1.5–2 hours to explore more thoroughly.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring warm clothing for November weather.
Combining both the temple visit and a brief cable car ride is feasible in a single day, but if you want to enjoy the mountain trails fully, consider allocating more time for SanHuangZhai.
