Washington DC transport

I've got a lot of questions:

* Best way to get from Dulles Airport to Du Pont Circle - we won't have much luggage so could easily do public transport. Or does anyone have an indication of what an Uber would cost?

* Metro/bus - I see (I think) the metro you can just tap in and out with a contactless card? Can you use that for bus services as well? Do the day tickets allow you to use bus and metro? And can you buy a day ticket at the station or you need the app?

* Would it be worth renting a bike or just as easy to get public transport? (we're always happy to walk as well!)

Getting around Washington DC is generally convenient thanks to its metro, bus system, and walkable neighborhoods. Here's a detailed breakdown based on your questions:

1. Getting from Dulles Airport (IAD) to Dupont Circle:

  • Public transport: Dulles is served by the Silver Line Express bus (Metrobus 5A) that goes to the Rosslyn Metro Station. From there, you can transfer to the Blue, Orange, or Silver Line to reach Dupont Circle. This option takes roughly 1 hour or slightly more depending on timing.
  • Uber/Lyft: A ride from Dulles to Dupont Circle is about 25–30 miles. Expect the fare to be roughly $50–$70 depending on traffic and surge pricing. Travel time is typically 40–60 minutes.
  • Taxi: A taxi is similar in cost to Uber, around $60–$75 including tip, and takes about the same travel time.

2. Metro and Bus System:

  • Yes, the DC Metro uses contactless payment via SmarTrip card, credit cards with tap functionality, or mobile wallets. You can use the same card for both Metro rail and Metrobus services.
  • Day passes: Metro offers a One-Day Pass ($14) or 7-Day Pass ($33+) which can be used for unlimited rides on Metro rail. For buses, a SmarTrip card automatically deducts the bus fare, and unlimited bus/rail day passes are available depending on your purchase method.
  • You can buy a SmarTrip card at any station vending machine or online. The physical card is preferred for visitors, and you can load it with a one-day unlimited ride option.

3. Biking vs. Public Transport:

  • Washington DC has a public bike-share system called Capital Bikeshare, with docking stations throughout the city. Renting a bike is ideal for short trips or exploring the National Mall and nearby neighborhoods.
  • If you are comfortable walking, many areas like Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom, and the Mall are highly walkable. Biking can be fun for a few hours, but not necessary if your plan involves mostly museums and landmarks.
  • Combining walking, Metro, and occasional bike rentals can be the most flexible approach.

Summary Suggestions: If you have light luggage and prefer cost efficiency, the Metrobus 5A plus Metro transfer is the cheapest option. Uber/Lyft is convenient for direct travel. Using a SmarTrip card covers both Metro and bus rides. Biking is optional and more suitable for short trips or scenic routes, but walking and public transport will suffice for most tourists.
