Bus routes for sight seeing

Any recommendations for a particular bus route for site seeing? We use the bus’s in NYC to see the city, and thought DC may be the same. Thanks for any info!

Washington DC does have a bus system, but it is not quite the same as New York City's extensive sightseeing options. While the standard Metrobus network can take you to many parts of the city, it is not designed specifically for tourists. For sightseeing, you may want to consider a combination of options to make the most of your visit.

Here are some options for seeing the city via bus:

  • DC Circulator Bus: This is a convenient and affordable option for tourists. It has several routes that connect major attractions, including the National Mall, Capitol Hill, Georgetown, and Union Station. Buses run frequently and are designed for easy hopping on and off.
  • Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Buses: Companies like Big Bus Tours or Old Town Trolley Tours operate dedicated sightseeing buses with routes covering monuments, museums, and neighborhoods. Tickets typically allow unlimited hopping on and off for the day, making it easy to plan a flexible itinerary.
  • Metrobus and Metrorail: For a more local experience, you can use the WMATA Metrobus system or Metrorail to reach sights. Key stops include Smithsonian (for museums), Foggy Bottom (for Kennedy Center and Georgetown access), and Union Station. Keep in mind that regular buses may be crowded during rush hours.

Tips for using buses for sightseeing in DC:

  • Plan your route in advance using the DC Circulator maps or a transit app to ensure you hit the sites you want efficiently.
  • Consider a mix of walking and bus travel, especially around the National Mall area, where many attractions are close together.
  • Hop-On Hop-Off tours are more expensive but provide historical commentary and convenient access to multiple attractions without worrying about navigation or schedules.
  • Be aware of peak traffic times, particularly around the National Mall and downtown, as buses can be delayed.

Overall, for a visitor used to NYC buses, the DC Circulator and Hop-On Hop-Off sightseeing buses will likely feel the most tourist-friendly and efficient. For a more authentic local experience, combining the Metrobus and Metrorail with some walking is a great way to see the city.
