Rental at 12th and Maryland NE ? A good location?

I am looking at renting a place for 4 nights at 12th and F ST NE just off Maryland Avenue with our 17 yr old grandson. Is this a safe area? What about transportation options to the major sites? We have stayed in the Dupont area before and found that to be a great location but like the house in this NE area.

Thanks for your response.

The intersection of 12th Street and F Street NE, near Maryland Avenue, is located in the Northeast quadrant of Washington DC. This area is outside the main tourist corridors like Dupont Circle, Penn Quarter, and Capitol Hill, so it is generally quieter. Safety can vary block by block in NE DC. While many areas are fine for daytime walking, it’s advisable to remain cautious after dark, particularly if unfamiliar with the neighborhood.

Safety considerations:

  • Daytime walking is generally safe, especially on main streets and near federal buildings.
  • Avoid poorly lit streets or deserted areas at night.
  • Use rideshare services like Uber or Lyft if traveling after dark or to less frequented areas.

Transportation options to major sites:

  • Metrorail: The closest stations are Union Station (Red Line) or NoMa-Gallaudet U (Red Line), which are a few blocks away; walking or a short rideshare can get you there.
  • Metrobus: Multiple bus lines run along Maryland Avenue and surrounding streets, providing access to Capitol Hill, the National Mall, and downtown.
  • Rideshare / Taxi: Convenient for trips directly to major sites, museums, or evening outings.
  • Biking / Scooters: Capital Bikeshare stations are nearby, allowing easy trips to the Mall or other attractions.

Pros of this location:

  • Potentially quieter and more residential than tourist-heavy areas.
  • Likely larger rental spaces for family stays compared to central hotels.
  • Close enough to downtown via Metro or rideshare.

Cons:

  • Not within easy walking distance to Smithsonian museums, the National Mall, or Dupont Circle.
  • Nighttime safety is more of a concern compared to central tourist areas.
  • May require more planning for dining, as there are fewer nearby restaurants compared to central areas.

Overall, if you prioritize a residential feel and more space for your stay, this NE DC location can work, but you should plan on using Metro or rideshare for quick and safe access to major tourist sites, especially in the evening.
