Transfer in Shanghai PVG T1

Hi,

I'll be transferring at Shanghai PVG T1 from an international to a domestic flight with 2.5 hrs of layover. The luggage are checked through so there is no need for collection and check in again.

May I know if 2.5hr of layover is sufficient? I am aware that it's the oct Golden Week though.

For a transfer at Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) Terminal 1 from an international to a domestic flight with 2.5 hours of layover, several factors need to be considered, especially during the October Golden Week, which is one of China’s busiest travel periods.

Since your luggage is checked through and you don’t need to collect or recheck it, this significantly reduces the time needed for transfer. However, the following points should be taken into account:

  • Immigration & security: After arriving from an international flight, you must go through Chinese immigration control. Lines can be long, particularly during Golden Week, so plan for at least 30–60 minutes.
  • Domestic security screening: After immigration, you need to clear security again for the domestic flight. This can take another 20–40 minutes depending on crowd levels.
  • Distance between gates: PVG Terminal 1 is large. Walking from international arrival gates to domestic departure gates can take 10–20 minutes, or longer if there is crowding.
  • Boarding time: Domestic flights usually begin boarding 30–40 minutes before departure.

Considering these factors, 2.5 hours is generally sufficient for a transfer under normal conditions, but Golden Week may increase waiting times. To stay safe, plan the following:

  • Move quickly to immigration immediately after deplaning.
  • Check the domestic departure gate as soon as you clear immigration to avoid unnecessary walking back and forth.
  • Consider using airport assistance services if available, such as fast-track or help desks for international-to-domestic transfers.
  • Keep an eye on flight status and gate changes via the airport app or screens.

In summary, your 2.5-hour layover is usually adequate if your international flight arrives on time and you move efficiently through immigration and security. However, due to Golden Week crowds, having a buffer mindset and moving promptly between gates is recommended.
