Power Banks requirements
Hi all,
I'm flying from Singapore and will be staying in Shanghai for a week before proceeding to Tokyo via the Pudong international airport. Saw the news that power banks without the CCC logo will be banned for domestic flights.
Does this rule apply for my case as i'm connecting within China to Tokyo? tried searching up on this but can't find any relevant answers.
Thanks.
In China, the Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC) has specific rules regarding the transport of power banks on flights. The key regulation is that power banks carried on domestic flights must have the Chinese CCC (China Compulsory Certification) mark. This is intended to ensure safety standards for batteries and prevent fire hazards.
For your situation, flying from Shanghai Pudong to Tokyo, this rule applies differently:
- Domestic flights within China: CCC-certified power banks are required. Airlines may refuse boarding with power banks lacking this certification.
- International flights departing China: The CCC requirement does not strictly apply for international departures. However, airlines will still follow general airline regulations for lithium batteries. Usually, power banks under 100Wh are allowed in carry-on luggage, and some airlines may require 100–160Wh power banks to be approved in advance.
- Connecting flights: Since your flight is from Shanghai to Tokyo (international), the domestic CCC regulation does not restrict you, provided the power bank meets general airline lithium battery regulations. You should carry it in your hand luggage, not checked baggage.
Additional tips:
- Check the rated capacity (Wh) of your power bank. Most travel-sized power banks (10,000–20,000mAh) are within 100Wh and should be fine.
- Keep the power bank in your carry-on and ensure it’s switched off during security checks.
- Some airlines may still ask for documentation or proof of capacity if the battery is large. Check with your airline’s website before flying.
In short, the CCC logo requirement is mainly for domestic Chinese flights. For your international connection from Shanghai to Tokyo, your power bank is generally allowed as long as it complies with standard airline safety rules for lithium batteries.
