Lake Tahoe Road Biking
A large group of 15 of us are coming to the area to road bike. We are mostly seniors and we had planned to bike around Lake Tahoe. Many people have suggested that we should NOT do that and do day trips instead. Can anyone help me with ideas?
We are looking for rides that are around 25-35 miles. We could base ourselves in Tahoe City or South Lake Tahoe. I am familiar with the Truckee River bike trail and the bike trail near S. Lake Tahoe, but I'm not sure how to make a full day out of either of those.
I'd appreciate any help that anyone could give.
Also, any recommendations where to rent regular and e-bikes would be appreciated.
Thank you so much!
Great plan — Lake Tahoe is beautiful for road cycling, but a single 72-mile circumnavigation is usually not the best choice for a mixed-ability senior group. I’ll give you several day-ride options (each ~25–35 miles), one-day shuttle/partial-loop ideas, safety & pacing tips for large groups, and a short list of reliable rental shops that offer e-bikes and regular road/comfort bikes.
Short summary / recommendation
Skip the full 72-mile loop as a single group ride (traffic, narrow shoulders and logistics make it hard). Base in Tahoe City if you want easier access to the north shore and Truckee; base in South Lake Tahoe for Emerald Bay / west-shore rides. Use shuttle support or split the group by pace, and consider e-bikes so everyone can maintain similar average speeds and enjoy the scenery.
North-shore (base: Tahoe City) — good 25–35 mile options
- Tahoe City → Truckee loop (Hwy 89 / River Rd. / CA-267) — ~28–32 miles round trip. Mostly rolling with generous, scenic stretches along the Truckee River and through Truckee’s historic downtown. Excellent choice for a group that prefers more level pedals with a few rolling climbs; lots of places to stop for lunch/coffee in Truckee. (This loop is a classic ~30-mile training ride for the area.)
- Tahoe City → Kings Beach → Tahoe Vista out-and-back (adjustable) — ~20–36 miles depending how far east you go. Ride the north shore with lake views and several beach/vista stops; you can make it a comfortable ~30-mile day by riding to Kings Beach then continuing east toward Incline Village before turning back. Note: north shore has some busier segments near neighborhoods but is generally bike-friendly.
- Truckee/legacy trail + Olympic Valley extension — 25–35 miles. Combine the Truckee River multi-use trail with the paved route into Olympic Valley (Palaisades Tahoe) and back for a steady day that’s easy to shorten/lengthen. Good for groups since you can bail to the trail if traffic gets heavy.
South-shore (base: South Lake Tahoe) — good 25–35 mile options
- South Lake Tahoe → Emerald Bay round trip (Highway 89) — ~22–26 miles round trip (depending on exact start/turnpoints). One of the most scenic paved rides in Tahoe: steady climbs and rewarding views at Emerald Bay / Vikingsholm / Eagle Falls. Add a western spur to DL Bliss or extra out-and-backs on the shoreline to push it into the 25–35 mile range. Expect busy visitor traffic and limited parking at Emerald Bay on peak days — start early.
- South Lake → Fallen Leaf Lake → Cascade Lake → Emerald Bay loop (custom) — ~25–35 miles depending on routing. This option mixes quiet forested roads around Fallen Leaf with the classic Emerald Bay vistas; there are steeper sections but plenty of scenic stops. Good for splitting into a faster and a more relaxed subgroup.
Partial-loop + shuttle ideas (highly recommended for a large senior group)
- Do half-loops (e.g., South Lake → Emerald Bay → Tahoma) and have a shuttle/van meet the group partway to drive riders back — this reduces total climbing and traffic exposure.
- Arrange a SAG (support and gear) vehicle to carry water, spares, and a rider who needs to stop — invaluable for groups of 15.
- If anyone is unsure about distance or hills, offer e-bike options so that less confident riders can stay with the group without overexerting. E-bikes are widely available locally.
Safety & logistics (short list)
- Ride clockwise if you attempt longer lakeside stretches — motorists tend to look at the lake; clockwise positioning improves visibility and shoulder behavior. Always obey “may use full lane” rules when shoulder is unsafe. Helmets, lights, and high-visibility clothing are essential.
- Avoid midday in high summer traffic; start early (7–8 AM) to beat crowds and parking issues (Emerald Bay fills quickly).
- Group management: split into pods by pace (e.g., 12–14 mph / 14–16 mph), designate ride leaders and sweepers, and time rest stops so the whole group doesn’t bottle up lanes. Consider radios/phone group chat for coordination.
- Bring basic repair gear and tubes; local shops will help with repairs but support vehicle reduces downtime. Many rental shops can deliver/collect bikes for groups.
Recommended reliable rental shops (regular & e-bikes) — helpful for groups
- Olympic Bike Shop — Tahoe City (large rental fleet, comfort and road options).
- evo / Tahoe City rentals (e-bikes and hybrids; online reservations).
- Bike Truckee / Truckee River Bikes (Truckee / North Tahoe — can rent e-bikes and often deliver). Good if some of your group wants to base in Truckee.
- Pine Nut Cycle Cafe / South Lake e-bike shops (South Lake Tahoe — big e-bike fleets, good location near Emerald Bay road).
- Tahoe EBikes / Kings Beach (east/north shore e-bike rentals for shorter scenic rides).
Practical tips for a large senior group
- Reserve bikes well in advance and ask shops about group discounts and delivery/pick-up. Ask for step-through frames if any riders have mobility issues.
- Plan one or two “easy days” (shorter loops near your base) and one longer day (Truckee loop or Emerald Bay with a SAG). That gives recovery time and lets riders choose mileage.
- Check local weather and roadwork before you go; shoulders can be narrow in places and seasonal maintenance or sand/gravel may be present early/late season.
Example 3-day sample plan (if you want a template)
- Day 1 — Easy warm-up (Tahoe City base): Truckee River path + Tahoe City → Kings Beach out-and-back (~15–25 miles). Easy pace, short stops.
- Day 2 — Main day (choice): North: Tahoe City → Truckee loop (~28–32 miles) OR South: South Lake → Emerald Bay round trip (~22–26 miles) + optional extension to reach ~30 miles. SAG vehicle optional.
- Day 3 — Recovery / scenic ride: Short lakeshore cruise, local paved trails, or an easy guided e-bike tour (many outfitters offer guided e-bike options if you want a non-riding day for some).
Wrapping up — what I’d do if it were my group
Base in the shore community that matches your preferred scenery (Tahoe City for Truckee/north shore access; South Lake for Emerald Bay/west shore). Book e-bikes for several riders so those who want help on the hills can stay with the group, reserve a local rental shop that can deliver and pick up for a group of 15, and hire or designate a SAG vehicle. Plan two 25–35 mile days (Truckee loop and Emerald Bay + extension) and one gentle day. This gives everyone memorable views and manageable riding without the stress of the full 72-mile loop.
