2 Day driving trip on Highway 1 - from LAX to SFO

Hi All

I have been browsing so many websites for inspiration and have made myself even more confused. We hope to take a 2 day - 1 night, drive from LAX to SFO, and would like to enjoy the scenery along Highway 1.

I am aware some areas of this are closed, so are you able to assist in providing a suitable itinerary of sightseeing points and a lovely place to stop overnight (midway-ish)

We aren't great hikers, so going on long trails and walks isn't something we are looking to do, but maybe to see some of the sights, whilst having a meal or coffee, is that doable?

I did see the Big Sur is a great sight, but I believe we would have to backtrack a little, happy to include it if we don't lose too much of our time.

Also, what would be the best time to start this journey from Los Angeles?

I have tried to put in as much as I can think of, but happy to add more info if required, the trip will be in early March, so need to take the weather into consideration also.

Thanks in advance.

A 2-day Highway 1 drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco in early March is a fantastic way to experience California’s coastal scenery. Since you prefer minimal hiking and want scenic stops for meals or coffee, I’ve created a relaxed itinerary with natural viewpoints and charming towns along the way.

Day 1: Los Angeles to Midway Stop (Cambria/San Simeon)

Start early from LAX around 7:00–8:00 AM to avoid LA traffic and maximize daylight for the drive. Drive along US-101 North, which merges with Highway 1 near Oxnard.

  • Santa Barbara: Stop for coffee or breakfast downtown or along State Street. Take a short walk along the waterfront or pier.
  • Solvang: A quaint Danish-style town perfect for a mid-morning snack, quick sightseeing, and photography.
  • Pismo Beach or Morro Bay: Ideal for a quick lunch stop with ocean views. You can stroll the pier and enjoy the seaside atmosphere.
  • Hearst Castle / San Simeon: If interested, stop for a tour of Hearst Castle (tours typically take 1–2 hours). Otherwise, drive through and enjoy the coastal views.
  • Overnight Stop: Cambria or San Simeon. Cambria is charming with boutique inns, cozy restaurants, and an accessible seaside stroll.

Day 2: Cambria/San Simeon to San Francisco

Start after breakfast (~8:00–9:00 AM). This day includes some of the most dramatic coastal views along Big Sur.

  • Ragged Point / Big Sur Viewpoints: Stop for photos without long hikes. The cliffs and ocean views are spectacular.
  • McWay Falls: Short walk from the parking lot to view the waterfall that drops directly onto the beach — very easy and iconic.
  • Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park: No long hikes needed; you can enjoy the overlook and have a coffee break.
  • Monterey/Carmel: Stop for lunch and a stroll along Cannery Row or Carmel-by-the-Sea. Monterey Bay Aquarium is optional if time allows.
  • Santa Cruz: Brief stop for coffee or a quick stroll along the boardwalk, depending on timing.
  • Continue driving to San Francisco, aiming to arrive by late afternoon or early evening.

Additional Tips:

  • Weather in early March can be variable. Coastal fog and rain are possible, so check forecasts and plan to leave earlier if rain is expected.
  • Highway 1 is partially closed in some areas due to landslides or road work. US-101 is a reliable alternative if detours are needed.
  • Keep driving segments under 3–4 hours at a stretch to enjoy stops comfortably.
  • For minimal walking, focus on scenic viewpoints accessible by car and short boardwalks or piers in towns.

This itinerary allows you to experience the highlights of California’s coast, including Big Sur, without long hikes, while enjoying charming towns and scenic meal stops along the way.
