PCH From San Francisco to Santa Barbara
Hi, Doing a portion of PCH---a bit last minute and am hoping for some input. We (2 adults) start in San Fran and finish in Santa Barbara—do not need help with those cities. Main interests are: scenery, marine life, walks/short hikes, local food & maybe some clothing thrift stores if they are not out of the way. I know it's short - do not need to see everything as we hope to return. I am looking for advice on how to plan 2 nights along the route to be best situated.
Tues – overnight in San Fran-using it as jumping off point (do not need help here)
Wed morning– drive to Santa Cruz (I know it’s not that far, but this needs to be an overnight for us bec we have a free hotel stay :-)
Thu – ?drive down to Big Sur and overnight Monterey, or overnight where?
Fri – depart early to arrive in Santa Barbara early afternoon - (have a friend here so do not need help.)
Thank you
Driving the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to Santa Barbara is a stunning route, especially if your priorities include scenery, marine life, short hikes, local food, and unique shopping. With only 2 nights along the route, the key is to balance driving time with enjoyable stops.
Here’s a suggested itinerary based on your plan:
Wed – San Francisco to Santa Cruz
- Depart SF in the morning and head down Highway 1. Stop at Half Moon Bay or Pescadero for coastal views, beaches, and maybe a quick snack (Pigeon Point Lighthouse and local bakery in Pescadero are popular).
- Arrive in Santa Cruz by lunchtime. Walk along the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, explore the local wharf, or take a short coastal walk at Natural Bridges State Beach.
- Thrift shopping in downtown Santa Cruz or Pacific Avenue is doable if you have time—look for Second Chance or local vintage stores.
- Overnight in Santa Cruz (using your hotel stay).
Thu – Santa Cruz to Big Sur / Monterey area
- Start early to maximize stops along the coast. Drive south on Highway 1 through Watsonville and Aptos, then follow the coast through scenic areas including Davenport and Capitola.
- Consider a short hike at Wilder Ranch State Park or enjoy the coastal bluff trails at Natural Bridges.
- Midday, stop in Monterey/Carmel for lunch—Monterey has fresh seafood (Old Fisherman’s Wharf) and Carmel has charming local shops and galleries, including some thrift/vintage stores.
- If you want to overnight closer to Big Sur, options include Big Sur Lodge or local inns near Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. This reduces drive time and lets you enjoy sunset and coastal walks without rushing. Alternatively, overnight in Monterey if you prefer more dining and accommodation options.
- For marine life, consider a brief stop at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve or take a whale watching tour from Monterey Bay if time allows.
Fri – Monterey / Big Sur to Santa Barbara
- Depart early to maximize daylight along the PCH. Drive through Big Sur, stopping at iconic viewpoints like Bixby Bridge, McWay Falls, and Garrapata State Park.
- Grab breakfast or coffee along the route at a local cafe (Big Sur Bakery is popular).
- Continue down through San Simeon (Elephant Seal Rookery viewing) and Morro Bay if you want a short walk or snack stop.
- Arrive in Santa Barbara by early afternoon as planned.
Tips for your trip:
- Book accommodations in Monterey or Big Sur early, as these can fill quickly, especially with weekend or holiday traffic.
- Check for marine life viewing windows—early morning often offers calmer seas for whale watching or seal viewing.
- Bring layers, as coastal weather can change quickly along the PCH.
- If you prioritize scenery over driving time, staying one night in Big Sur and one night in Santa Cruz maximizes the experience rather than trying to reach Monterey both nights.
In summary, with 2 nights, the most scenic and practical plan is to overnight in Santa Cruz first, then either Monterey or Big Sur, depending on whether you want more coastal exploration or easier access to restaurants and amenities. This balances driving, sightseeing, and enjoyable stops along the Pacific Coast Highway.
