AliPay - Is a verified account needed?

Hello.

For my upcoming China trip, I am setting up AliPay on my mobile phone.

On setting up an AliPay account, do I have to verify my account or will an unverified account do if I am only using it for mobile payments on food, transport and tourists attractions/entrance fees?

I am researching AliPay and how it works for payments, so any practical usage experiences would be welcomed.

Thanks in advance for any replies

When setting up AliPay for use in China, there are a few key points regarding account verification and practical usage:

Unverified vs Verified Accounts:

  • An unverified AliPay account allows very limited functionality. You can typically link a foreign bank card and use AliPay for certain payments, but the daily and total transaction limits are very low, and not all merchants accept unverified accounts.
  • For practical use—paying for food, public transport, and tourist attractions—a verified account is highly recommended. Verification involves linking your passport and sometimes a Chinese mobile number. This increases the transaction limits and ensures smooth payment acceptance.
  • Some QR code payments at small restaurants, markets, or transport kiosks may not work with unverified accounts, so carrying a small amount of cash or a payment backup is wise.

Practical Experience Tips:

  • Tourist attractions and major restaurants in Chengdu usually accept AliPay, but unverified accounts may not always go through—especially for higher amounts.
  • Verification is generally straightforward but can require uploading your passport and linking a foreign bank card. Some users find it easier to verify once in China with a local phone number.
  • For public transport (metro, buses, bike sharing), a verified account ensures smooth access and avoids transaction errors.

In summary, if you only plan to make very small purchases and want to use AliPay casually, an unverified account may suffice, but for reliable daily use—especially with multiple purchases or larger payments—a verified account is strongly recommended. Carrying some cash is still useful for backup in smaller shops or taxis.
