Royal Lahaina or Aston at the Whaler

Hello , the wife and I are going to Maui at end of October for 1 week. It is my wife’s first time but I went before over 20 years ago. We are deciding between the Royal Lahaina and The Whaler. The prince for 7 nights is about the same. At the Royal Lahaina the price is for an Ocean View room in the tower and includes breakfast for 2 and at the Whaler we would be able to get a premium ocean view room that has two bathrooms. Since the it is just the two of us, we don’t need all that room, but it would be nice to have 2 full bathrooms and to be able to just have more space when in the room. We are not really pool people but definitely are beach people. Based on my research both seem to have a nice beach and I understand that The Whaler is closer to shops etc…. At this moment we are leaning towards the Whaler just because we would have much larger accommodations, however, is there a reason we should go with Royal Lahaina even thought it would just be a regular room?

Both Royal Lahaina and The Whaler are excellent choices for a Maui stay, but they cater to slightly different preferences. Since you are beach-focused and not pool-focused, both will satisfy that requirement, though there are subtle differences that may influence your decision.

Royal Lahaina

The Royal Lahaina is a traditional resort with a full-service atmosphere. Staying in the tower ocean view room offers convenient proximity to the beach, and the included breakfast is a nice perk that adds value and convenience for mornings. It has multiple dining options on-site and a large, landscaped pool area if you ever change your mind about pool time.

  • Includes daily breakfast for two, which can save money and start your day with ease.
  • Beach is excellent for swimming, sunbathing, and basic snorkeling near the shore.
  • More of a classic resort feel with resort amenities, including on-site activities and restaurants.
  • Location is a little quieter than central Lahaina town, offering a more relaxed pace.

The Whaler

The Whaler is a condominium-style property with spacious units and the convenience of having full kitchens. A premium ocean view with two bathrooms is luxurious for two people, offering comfort and privacy. It is located right in the heart of Kaanapali, which means easy access to shopping, restaurants, and evening strolls along the promenade.

  • Larger, more modern condo-style accommodations with full kitchens and living spaces.
  • Two bathrooms are a nice bonus even for just two people, especially for relaxing without feeling cramped.
  • Direct beach access with very good snorkeling off the shore.
  • Close to Kaanapali shops, dining, and nightlife, giving flexibility if you want to explore on foot.

Considerations for Your Decision

  • If you value on-site breakfast, traditional resort amenities, and a slightly quieter location, Royal Lahaina is appealing.
  • If you prefer more space, the flexibility of a condo, closer access to shops and restaurants, and don’t mind skipping the included breakfast, The Whaler is likely the better choice.
  • Since you are mostly beach-focused and not pool-focused, both options provide excellent access to sand and surf.

In summary, for a couple who wants spacious accommodations, convenience for walking around Kaanapali, and a more modern condo experience, The Whaler makes sense. Royal Lahaina is better if you value resort amenities, breakfast inclusion, and a classic resort vibe. Either choice will give you a great beach-focused Maui experience.
