Healthy Grindz

Aloha Kauai TA Ohana,

Will be returning to Kauai after a long 6 year absence. Due to certain health conditions, I'll unfortunately have to avoid past favorites like loco moco, saimin, plate lunches, puka dog, shave ice and malasadas :(

What are some of your favorite spots for healthy grindz?

I did a little research and haven't come up with much other than maybe Greenery Cafe in Lihue and Fresh Bite in Hanalei. Not sure if Break + Feast in Koloa offers much.

Do plan on visiting past sashimi and poke favorites like Konohiki Seafoods and maybe Hanalei Dolphin as well as the farmers markets.

Any suggestions are welcome. Mahalo in advance!

Aloha! Great to hear you’re returning to Kauai. Even with dietary restrictions, there are plenty of healthy options on the island beyond the usual local plate lunches and sweets. Kauai has a growing scene of cafés, health-focused eateries, and farmer’s markets that emphasize fresh, organic, and plant-forward options.

Here are some suggestions to consider during your trip:

  • Greenery Café (Lihue) – You mentioned this one already. It’s a solid choice for fresh salads, wraps, smoothie bowls, and lighter fare made with locally sourced ingredients.
  • Fresh Bite (Hanalei) – Great for poke bowls, smoothie bowls, and fresh salads. Offers lighter options and customizable dishes for dietary needs.
  • Break + Feast (Koloa) – Offers some healthier breakfast and lunch options, including grain bowls, fresh fruit, and salads. Portions tend to be generous and ingredients fresh.
  • Hanalei Bread Company (Hanalei) – Excellent for fresh baked bread, sandwiches, and vegan/vegetarian options. Great stop after exploring the North Shore.
  • Ono Family Restaurant / The Healthy Hut – Located in Kapaa, these small spots are known for fresh smoothie bowls, wraps, and vegetarian-friendly dishes.
  • Farmers Markets – Kauai has several weekly farmers markets which are perfect for fresh fruits, vegetables, and healthy prepared foods:
    • Kapa’a Market – Tuesdays and Saturdays
    • Hanalei Farmers Market – Saturdays
    • Poipu Farmers Market – Tuesdays
  • Local Poke & Sashimi Options – Even if avoiding heavier local fare, poke and sashimi from Konohiki Seafoods or Hanalei Dolphin can be a healthy, protein-rich choice, just skip the rice or heavy sauces if needed.

Additional tips:

  • Many cafes and smoothie spots also offer vegan or gluten-free options. Ask for modifications if needed.
  • Buying fresh produce from farmer’s markets allows you to create your own healthy snacks and meals, which is helpful if you have specific dietary restrictions.
  • Check for smaller, locally-owned cafés along your route — sometimes the healthiest and most unique options are in hidden spots away from tourist-heavy areas.

In short, while Kauai is famous for plate lunches and sweets, the island has plenty of healthy “grindz” options for those avoiding heavy or fried foods. Planning stops at Greenery Café, Fresh Bite, and farmers markets should give you a varied and satisfying selection during your stay.
