Haena Question - Pick Up
We consider ourselves veterans of visiting Kauai and we're completely on board with the Haena reservation process. We have shuttle passes in hand for 3/26 fro m the Makai Golf course pick up point. That being said I have a question regarding her return.
I'm going to drop my wife at the Princeville pick up point at the Makai golf course and then I'm going to stay and play a round of golf while my wife does the hike to Hanakapiai Beach and then enjoys some time at Ke'e. Will they allow me to drive in to the park to pick up my wife later in the afternoon? Or do I need to have her walk out past the gate house?
Also, I realize there's limited cell coverage at Haena - but does anyone have any recent experience that there's sufficient coverage around the lifeguard tower/parking lot that she can make/get a phone call for pickup?
Thanks! and Aloha - just 23 days away..............
For the Haena State Park and the Nā Pali Coast access, the shuttle and vehicle entry rules are quite strict due to limited parking and preservation efforts. If you’re planning to drop your wife off at the Makai Golf Course pick-up point and then stay in the park to play golf or for any other reason, here’s what you need to know based on recent visitor experiences:
Driving In for Pickup
- Generally, the only vehicles allowed past the Haena Park entrance are those with a valid parking or entry permit for that day. You cannot just drive in to pick someone up unless your vehicle is listed on a valid reservation or permit.
- Because your wife will be using a shuttle, the park expects her to exit via the shuttle system if you are not on a reservation. She cannot be picked up at a random time or spot inside the park without violating the entry rules.
- Most visitors who want a mid-hike pickup typically need to schedule it as part of the shuttle or arrange with someone who has a valid vehicle reservation, otherwise she must exit via the standard shuttle route past the gatehouse.
Cell Coverage
- Cell phone coverage is very limited throughout Haena State Park and along the Kalalau Trail. Coverage is somewhat better near the Keʻe Beach / lifeguard tower parking area, but it is not guaranteed and may depend on your carrier. Many hikers report that calls can go through, but text messages may be delayed or fail.
- To ensure pickup coordination, your wife should plan to return via the shuttle system, or meet at the official park exit/gatehouse, where coverage is generally better and park rules allow for vehicle pickup.
- It’s a good idea to set a clear meeting time and location in advance, given the unreliable signal along the trail.
Summary Recommendations
- Do not plan to drive into the park for a mid-hike pickup unless your vehicle has a valid reservation; it’s unlikely to be allowed.
- Coordinate pickup at the park entrance or via the official shuttle drop-off system.
- Prepare for limited cell coverage — rely on pre-arranged times and locations rather than real-time calls if possible.
In short, your best approach is to have your wife use the shuttle system for her hike and meet you at the official exit/gatehouse for pickup, rather than trying to drive in. This aligns with the current park regulations and avoids any risk of being turned away.
