San Diego neighborhood hotel

Question

I have been researching what neighborhood to stay in for a couple nights and still can't figure it out.

I live in California so not interested so much in the beach. Really most interested in an area that would be entertaining to walk around during day and at night, like stores, restaurants, people.

Any recs on neighborhood are greatly appreciated
