Day trips from copper?
Will be in Copper first week of September for just a couple days mid-week. Looking for a couple day trips that would include a pretty drive,a hike, fishing, and places to eat. Don't want a long hike that would take over 3 hours. Fishing could be fly or spinning tackle. Not looking for high end dining. Thanks for any help.
Copper Mountain is a great base for exploring central Colorado, and with only a couple of days mid-week, you can enjoy scenic drives, moderate hikes, fishing, and casual dining without feeling rushed.
Day Trip Options:
- Frisco and Dillon Reservoir: About 15 minutes from Copper, the drive along I-70 offers mountain views. Hike the Hiking Trail Around Dillon Reservoir for a 2-3 hour loop with beautiful water views. Fishing is available at Dillon Reservoir (permits required). Grab casual lunch or dinner at Butterhorn Bakery & Cafe or Guanella Pass Deli.
- Guanella Pass to Georgetown: Scenic byway starting near Georgetown (~1 hour drive). Hike the Mount Bierstadt Trailhead shorter loops or Romer Lake Trail for a 2-3 hour hike with waterfalls and lakes. Fishing can be done in local alpine streams. Casual eats in Georgetown include Cooper’s Restaurant or Alpine Arts Center Café.
- Leadville & Turquoise Lake: Drive about 1 hour south to Leadville. Turquoise Lake offers calm fishing opportunities (fly or spin) and easy trails around the lake for a scenic 2-3 hour hike. Casual lunch at High Mountain Pies or Guanella Deli.
Additional Tips:
- Check Colorado fishing regulations for the specific bodies of water; some require special permits or have seasonal restrictions.
- Morning or late afternoon hikes are best to avoid heat and afternoon thunderstorms common in early September.
- Pack water, snacks, and appropriate layers as temperatures can vary quickly in the mountains.
- For casual dining near Copper, options include Ten Mile Tavern, Peaks Gastro Pub, or The Lodge at Copper for simple, hearty meals without high-end prices.
Overall, a mix of scenic drives, moderate hikes with water features, and lakes or streams for fishing will make your short stay enjoyable and relaxing without overly strenuous activity.
