Transportation to Alaska Rainforest Santuary?
We will be in Ketchikan on Monday, May 26, 205 from 10 am - 6pm as part of a cruise on Princess Cruise Lines, and are considering not scheduling an excursion for the day. We are most interested in exploring the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary (family of 5, ages 51, 51, 22, 19, and 16) and then just meandering around in shops, grabbing a meal until we return to the boat. This will be our last stop after on our cruise after several more adventerous days on land and sean. We would prefer not to take a guided tour if possible. What's the best option for transportation to/from the dock to the sanctuary and town? Thanks!
Visiting the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary independently from Ketchikan is entirely doable, but since it’s located a bit outside the town center, transportation planning is key. The sanctuary is about 18 miles north of downtown Ketchikan, so it’s not within walking distance from the cruise docks.
Transportation Options:
- Taxi or Ride-Share: Taking a taxi or ride-share (like Uber or local apps if available) is the simplest and most flexible option. The drive is roughly 25–30 minutes each way. For a family of five, you may need to request two vehicles or a larger van if available.
- Rental Car: If you’re comfortable driving in Ketchikan, renting a car for the day allows maximum flexibility, especially if you want to explore the sanctuary at your own pace and also visit town afterward. Note that parking at the sanctuary is available.
- Shuttle or Private Transfer: Some local companies offer shuttle services to the sanctuary for cruise passengers. You can book a private transfer in advance, which ensures a set schedule and pickup/drop-off directly at the cruise terminal.
- Combination of Public Transit and Taxi: Ketchikan has limited public bus service, but it may not be convenient for reaching the sanctuary. You could take a bus partway and then taxi, but for a short shore day, a direct taxi or private transfer is usually easier.
Timing Tips:
- Since your window is 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, plan at least 1.5–2 hours for each leg of the drive to allow for sanctuary exploration without rushing.
- Allocate 2–3 hours at the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary to enjoy walking trails, wildlife viewing, and guided presentations (if desired).
- Reserve some time for walking through downtown Ketchikan afterward, visiting shops, and grabbing a meal before returning to the ship.
Recommendation: For a family of five who prefers not to join a guided excursion, booking a private taxi or transfer from the dock directly to the sanctuary, spending a few hours there, then returning to town for lunch and strolling is the most straightforward and stress-free plan. Renting a car is also a good option if you are comfortable driving, as it adds flexibility to explore other nearby areas or adjust timing.
