Daily Road Closure & local Maui Updates.

Maui does have some local Maui Emergency programs. You register with MEMA and they text you alerts. At this time their maps do not show street names and can be very disorienting. We received the evacuation map when we had the recent Kaanapali fire. The map looked like a half eaten plate of spaghetti. Spaghetti being the roads.

The simplest Maui road & emergency updates are posted by Maui 24/7. They publish accurate updates on Facebook and on Instagram. Two weeks ago we had a meeting with the head of MEMA & she praised the accuracy of Maui 24/7's news coverage.

Yesterday Maui 24/7 posted information on Maui's 3 fires . This morning, 2 hours ago, they posted the information on the brush fire , the police closure of Hana Highway (360) , and updates that the fire was extinguished. Maui 24/7 maps do have street names and the highways have numbers and names.

The Getaways

For anyone traveling or living on Maui, staying updated on road closures, emergencies, and other local developments is essential for safety and planning. Maui has several resources to keep you informed, both from official sources and from local news outlets.

Official Emergency Alerts and Maps:

  • MEMA (Maui Emergency Management Agency) — Residents and visitors can register to receive text alerts for emergencies on Maui. These alerts notify you about fires, road closures, and other urgent situations. However, the official maps from MEMA can be difficult to interpret as they sometimes lack detailed street names and may appear confusing.
  • Evacuation Maps — Provided during emergencies such as fires, these maps indicate affected areas and suggested evacuation routes. While helpful, they can look complex and require careful interpretation due to their abstract representations of roads and terrain.

Local News and Road Updates:

  • Maui 24/7 — A highly recommended source for accurate and timely updates. They post daily information on road closures, brush fires, and other local hazards. Their maps are easier to read than MEMA’s, as they include street names and highway numbers, making it much simpler for travelers to navigate during emergencies.
  • Social Media Updates — Maui 24/7 posts on Facebook and Instagram, providing real-time information. These posts often include maps, photos, and specific locations for closures or hazards, which is particularly useful during active events like fires or flooding.

Practical Tips for Travelers and Residents:

  • Register with MEMA to receive emergency text alerts directly to your phone.
  • Follow Maui 24/7 on social media for the latest road and emergency updates.
  • Keep a physical or digital map of Maui handy, as this can help interpret closure notices or evacuation routes more easily than abstract emergency maps.
  • Plan extra travel time if you know there are active incidents, such as brush fires, which may temporarily close major roads like Hana Highway (360).
  • Always stay aware of local advisories and practice aloha — remain calm and respectful during emergency situations.

By combining MEMA alerts with Maui 24/7 updates, travelers and residents can stay informed and navigate safely through any situation that may arise on the island.
