will a government shutdown close all Yosemite roads?

We are planning a trip to Yosemite ( also Crater Lake, Lassen, and Redwoods) in early October. I am concerned that if a government shutdown happens, which is looking very possible, are the roads through the parks all closed too? I understand that services would be stopped. I am just hoping we could at least drive though and perhaps stop at some overlooks. Would 120 still be open?

In the event of a federal government shutdown, National Parks like Yosemite typically remain technically “open,” but services are drastically reduced or unavailable. This includes visitor centers, campgrounds, restrooms, and staffed entrance stations. Roads are usually not physically blocked, but some gates may be unmanned and parking areas could be limited or closed.

Specifically regarding Yosemite:

  • Major roads, such as Highway 120 (Tioga Pass Road) through the park, are often open to through traffic if conditions allow. However, note that Tioga Pass typically closes seasonally in late fall due to snow, so in early October it may still be open depending on weather.
  • Other park roads, like Glacier Point Road or Mariposa Grove access roads, may have restricted parking or limited access if staffed facilities are closed.
  • Overlooks and scenic pullouts along main roads are generally accessible, but amenities like restrooms and trash service may not be available.

Practical considerations:

  • Bring cash for any unforeseen fees or parking, as electronic services may be offline.
  • Carry water, snacks, and be prepared for limited cell coverage in some areas.
  • Check official park updates shortly before your visit, as closures and access can change quickly depending on the shutdown status and weather.

Summary:

  • You can usually drive through Yosemite and enjoy the scenery even during a shutdown.
  • Services will be very limited; plan accordingly.
  • Highway 120 is likely open in early October, but confirm current conditions before traveling.

In short, a shutdown does not automatically close all roads, but your experience will be more self-sufficient and less supported than during normal operations.
