January chengdu to hongkong and sleeper train?

Hello! We are looking at going to hongkong in january for a week and possibly flying into chengdu first for a week. Is there a sleeper train between cities and will it be running in winter? I think a day train will be too long for our kids.

Thank you

Traveling from Chengdu to Hong Kong by train is possible, but there are some important details to consider, especially for a winter trip with children.

1. Sleeper trains between Chengdu and Hong Kong:

  • There is no direct sleeper train from Chengdu to Hong Kong at the moment. The high-speed rail network does not extend all the way to Hong Kong with overnight trains.
  • Most travelers take the high-speed train to Guangzhou first (about 8–10 hours), and then transfer to a high-speed train or intercity train to Hong Kong (approximately 2 hours from Guangzhou South Station to Hong Kong West Kowloon Station).
  • Alternatively, there are conventional trains with soft sleeper or hard sleeper options, but these usually require multiple transfers, including crossing into the Hong Kong area, and are slower and less convenient.

2. Winter operation:

  • All trains, including high-speed and conventional sleeper trains, operate year-round in January. Winter weather in Sichuan and Guangdong is mild, so service is not usually affected by snow or cold.
  • Tickets for January can be busy due to Chinese New Year preparations (if it falls near your travel dates), so it’s best to book as early as possible.

3. Recommendations for traveling with children:

  • Considering the long journey and comfort, a high-speed train with second-class or first-class seating may be more practical than a sleeper with transfers.
  • If you prefer a night journey, consider flying from Chengdu to Hong Kong directly. Flights are usually around 2.5 hours, faster than even the fastest train combination, and easier for kids.
  • If you still want a train experience, you could take a high-speed train to Guangzhou in the afternoon, stay overnight there, and then continue to Hong Kong the next morning.

Summary: There is no direct sleeper train from Chengdu to Hong Kong. High-speed trains operate year-round and are the most reliable and convenient option, especially for families traveling in January. Flying is also a comfortable alternative.
