New years eve

I will be traveling around Shenzen, HK and Macao in late Dec and Early Jan.

I was just wondering where the best place would be to spend New Years eve.

In Sydney, the harbour is the best place to enjoy the fireworks and atmosphere.

Where is the best place to enjoy the night from these 3 cities (Shenzen, HK and Macao)

For celebrating New Year’s Eve in the Greater Bay Area, among Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao, Hong Kong is widely regarded as the top choice for fireworks, festive atmosphere, and iconic views.

Hong Kong:

  • Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour hosts the most spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks display in the region. Fireworks are launched from barges in the harbour, providing an incredible skyline backdrop.
  • Popular viewing spots include the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, the Avenue of Stars, Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai, and along the Central waterfront. Many hotels and restaurants facing the harbour offer special NYE packages.
  • Street parties, concerts, and countdown events are held in Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Causeway Bay, creating a lively atmosphere similar to Sydney Harbour.

Macao:

  • Macao offers fireworks at the waterfront, especially near the Cotai Strip and Senado Square. While impressive, the scale is smaller than Hong Kong’s.
  • The Cotai Strip has many casino resorts with parties and shows, but the general city-wide atmosphere is more controlled and less crowded than Hong Kong.

Shenzhen:

  • Shenzhen has celebrations and fireworks at certain large hotels and public spaces like OCT Harbour and Civic Center, but it is generally not as iconic or tourist-focused as Hong Kong.
  • The city is more geared towards locals, and the skyline fireworks are less dramatic.

Recommendation:

  • If your priority is spectacular fireworks and a vibrant international atmosphere, Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour is the best option.
  • If you want a quieter celebration with entertainment options, Macao is an alternative.
  • Shenzhen can be convenient if you are staying locally, but it is not known for a major public NYE spectacle.

Tip: Arrive at your chosen viewing spot early in Hong Kong, as the waterfront areas get very crowded. Public transport is efficient but will have heavy traffic on NYE, so plan accordingly.
