Power Banks

I have been told I may need to buy a new power bank for my phone as European ones are not allowed.

I will be taking an internal flight.

Can anyone help please.

When flying domestically within China, power banks are allowed, but there are strict rules regarding their capacity and how they are carried. This applies to both foreign and locally purchased power banks.

1. Capacity Limits

  • Power banks with a capacity of up to 100 Wh (watt-hours) can be carried in carry-on luggage without airline approval.
  • Power banks between 100 Wh and 160 Wh require airline approval before boarding.
  • Power banks over 160 Wh are generally prohibited on passenger aircraft.
  • Most typical phone power banks fall under 20,000 mAh (approximately 74 Wh), which is acceptable.

2. Carry-on vs Checked Luggage

  • All power banks must be carried in your carry-on luggage; they are strictly prohibited in checked baggage.
  • Airline staff may ask to inspect the power bank at security checkpoints.

3. European vs Chinese Power Banks

  • There is no restriction on the origin of the power bank as long as it meets the capacity limits and is carried in the cabin.
  • Some older European power banks may not display the required specifications clearly, so check the label for Wh rating to avoid issues.

4. Practical Tips

  • Bring power banks with clear labeling of capacity (Wh or mAh and voltage) to speed up security checks.
  • Consider buying a power bank in China if your current one is not labeled or is above 100 Wh; Chinese airports and electronics stores carry compliant models.
  • Charge devices fully before the flight, and keep power banks easily accessible for inspection.

In summary, European power banks are allowed on internal flights in China as long as they comply with the capacity rules and are carried in carry-on luggage. There is no need to buy a new one unless your current power bank exceeds the airline limits or lacks clear labeling.
