Advice please on self transfer

I am flying out through Chengdu Tianfu from Beijing with self transfer from t2 to t1, I will only have 2.5hrs to collect and recheck luggage. Is this even feasible or do I simply curtail my shopping and stick to carry-on luggage only? Has anyone else had a tight turnaround and managed it with checked luggage?

Self-transferring between terminals at Chengdu Tianfu Airport with only 2.5 hours can be challenging, especially if you have checked luggage. The airport is modern and well-signposted, but there are several steps involved: collecting luggage, exiting the arrivals area, transferring to the other terminal (by shuttle or walking if terminals are close), and then checking in and going through security again for your next flight.

Here are some practical considerations:

  • With checked luggage, 2.5 hours is feasible but tight. Any delay on the first flight, waiting at baggage claim, or long security lines could make it stressful.
  • If your first flight is on time and the baggage claim is efficient, it is possible to make the connection.
  • Using only carry-on luggage significantly reduces risk and allows you more flexibility to explore duty-free or shop without worrying about luggage collection.
  • Make sure to check the terminal layout in advance and confirm the shuttle or transfer time between T2 and T1.

Additional tips:

  • Inform the check-in staff at Beijing that you are self-transferring; they may provide guidance or priority tagging for your luggage, if applicable.
  • Monitor your first flight closely for delays and have a backup plan if the connection looks tight.
  • Consider online check-in for your second flight to save time at the counter.

In summary, it is doable with careful planning, but for peace of mind, traveling with carry-on only is the safest choice for such a short self-transfer window, especially if you want to avoid stress or risk missing the next flight.
