Visiting Yosemite in second week of Novmber

Hi, my trip to San Fransisco and Yosemite planned for October 20th got pushed to November due to unforeseen circumstances. Me and my wife are planning a road trip to Yosemite and Lake Tahoe around November 11th and plan to spend two days at each place. I wanted to know how the weather usually is during November, should I cancel the Yosemite? Does it snow at this time? Would the roads close due to snow? Would the roads to Lake Tahoe be motorable from Yosemite?

Thank you

Sorry for all these questions, I wanted know if I should leave Yosemite and Lake Tahoe for another time.

Visiting Yosemite in the second week of November is possible, but there are a few considerations to keep in mind. The weather in Yosemite during November tends to be cool and can be unpredictable. Daytime temperatures in the valley are usually in the 40s–50s °F (5–15 °C), while nighttime temperatures can drop near or below freezing. Snow is possible, especially at higher elevations, though the valley floor may remain snow-free early in November.

Regarding roads and access:

  • Some high-elevation roads, such as Tioga Pass (Highway 120 East) and Glacier Point Road, are typically closed by early November due to snow. These closures are seasonal and can vary depending on snowfall.
  • The main valley roads (such as Big Oak Flat Road, Wawona Road, and South Entrance Road) are usually open year-round, so you can still access Yosemite Valley and its primary attractions.
  • Snow chains may be required if conditions worsen, so check the current park alerts before traveling.

For the drive from Yosemite to Lake Tahoe:

  • Routes via Highway 120 or Highway 50 are generally motorable in early November, but weather can change quickly. Snowstorms may require chains or temporarily close mountain passes.
  • Highway 50 over Echo Summit is usually open in November, but it is advisable to check Caltrans road conditions before departure.
  • If you encounter snow, travel times may be longer, so plan extra time and drive cautiously.

Overall advice:

  • You don’t need to cancel Yosemite entirely—visiting the valley and lower elevation areas is feasible and less crowded than summer.
  • If you want to explore high country areas or pass through Tioga Pass to reach eastern Sierra or Mono Lake, those roads will likely be closed.
  • Pack warm clothing, waterproof shoes, and be prepared for chilly mornings and evenings.

In summary, visiting Yosemite and Lake Tahoe in mid-November is doable if you stick to accessible areas and monitor weather/road conditions closely. You may experience early snow at higher elevations, but the valley and lower passes remain accessible and can offer beautiful, serene scenery without the summer crowds.
