July arrival
We will arrive at Yosemite around 1 pm in July. Looks like the Big Oak Flat entrance is our best option. Since we are staying at the Ahwahnee- can you suggest an afternoon itinerary that gets us from this entrance to the hotel? Where would you stop? Can you suggest a 2-3 mile hike? TIA
Arriving at Yosemite around 1 pm in July via the Big Oak Flat entrance gives you plenty of afternoon light to enjoy some iconic scenery while making your way to the Ahwahnee. Since your hotel is located in Yosemite Valley, you’ll be descending into the heart of the park, so it’s a great chance to stop at a few short viewpoints and take a manageable hike.
Suggested Route & Stops
- Big Oak Flat Entrance to Tunnel View: After entering, drive about 11 miles to Tunnel View. This is a classic spot offering sweeping views of El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall. It’s perfect for a few photos and a short break.
- Bridalveil Fall: Just a few minutes past Tunnel View. The fall is a short walk from the parking area (about 0.5 miles round trip) and a refreshing stop for the first hike of the day.
- Continue to Yosemite Valley: Drive along Wawona Road into the valley. You can enjoy the scenic views along the Merced River before reaching the Ahwahnee.
Recommended 2-3 Mile Hike in the Afternoon
- Lower Yosemite Fall Trail: 1 mile loop, easy, and offers incredible views of Yosemite Falls—the tallest in North America.
- Cook’s Meadow Loop: Approximately 2 miles, flat, and provides fantastic views of Half Dome and surrounding cliffs. Great for photos and spotting wildlife like deer.
- Mirror Lake Loop (partial): About 2 miles if you do the out-and-back portion. This is a pleasant, mostly flat walk with reflections of Half Dome in the water, ideal for late afternoon.
After your hike, continue to the Ahwahnee for check-in. The hotel’s location provides easy access to the valley’s major landmarks, so you’ll be perfectly situated to relax or do more sightseeing in the evening if desired.
Tips
- Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat; July can be warm.
- Parking at Tunnel View and Bridalveil Fall can fill quickly—arrive early if possible.
- Layered clothing is useful, as afternoons can be warm but shaded areas near waterfalls can be cooler.
This route gives you an iconic introduction to Yosemite with a manageable hike to stretch your legs before settling in at the Ahwahnee.
