Any transportation options for kids in car seats?

Hi! We are traveling to Miam/Fort Lauderdale for a weekend cruise. The only thing that's stressing me out is figuring out how to get from the MIA airport to Port Everglades (and then back again) especially since we have 2 kids who will still require a car seat. I thought about renting a car but then it'll be financially wasteful having to park the car during our cruise. I also thought about taking an uber or taxi, but will need one with space for 2 car seats. How readily available are ubers with car seats? Anyone have any advice or suggestions?

Traveling from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale with two young children in car seats requires a bit of planning, but there are several practical transportation options to consider. Each has advantages and potential drawbacks depending on convenience, cost, and comfort.

Here are the main options:

  • Private airport shuttle or car service: Many companies specialize in airport-to-port transfers and offer vehicles equipped with car seats. These services can be reserved in advance, ensuring that you have a vehicle suitable for your family. The service is often more expensive than rideshares but offers peace of mind and direct transport without stops.
  • Uber or Lyft with car seats: Uber offers an “Uber Car Seat” option in some areas, which provides a forward-facing car seat for children. Availability is limited and may require advance booking, so you need to check the app in advance. Lyft offers a similar service. Note that only one car seat is typically provided per vehicle, so for two children, you may need to bring a second seat or arrange for a larger vehicle equipped with car seats.
  • Rental car: Renting a car allows you to bring or rent multiple car seats and gives flexibility for timing. The main drawback is the cost of parking during your cruise at either the airport or a nearby long-term lot. However, many off-site airport parking facilities offer discounted long-term rates and shuttle service to the terminal.
  • Taxi or limo services: Traditional taxis and limousines can often provide vehicles that accommodate two car seats. You would need to call ahead and request this specifically. While taxis are convenient, availability of vehicles with multiple car seats is less guaranteed than private shuttle services.

Tips to make the transfer easier:

  • Book your transportation in advance to ensure vehicles have the necessary car seats.
  • Consider bringing your own car seats if rideshare or taxi options cannot guarantee two seats.
  • Check if your cruise line offers recommended transportation services; many have partnerships with shuttle companies experienced in handling families with small children.
  • Allow extra travel time between MIA and Port Everglades, as traffic in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale corridor can be heavy, especially on weekends.

In summary, the most reliable option for two kids in car seats is likely a private shuttle or reserved car service, although renting a car or carefully planning with rideshares can also work. Advance planning and confirming car seat availability will reduce stress and ensure a smooth start to your cruise weekend.
