Singapore to HK to Guangzhou and back to HK
We have a group of people with Singapore, Malaysia and New Zealand passport. Can I check whether it is ok for us to go from HK to Guangzhou and back to HK after 2 days? I ask this question because I was confused with the mention of 144 hrs visa which I do to know whether it is the same type of visas as I know for Singaporean.
Appreciate any pointers on the above.
Thanks
SFC
For your group traveling from Singapore, Malaysia, and New Zealand, here’s a detailed explanation regarding traveling from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and back to Hong Kong:
Hong Kong:
- All three nationalities (Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand) can enter Hong Kong visa-free for short stays—typically 30–90 days depending on the passport.
- No visa is needed for your initial stay in Hong Kong.
Mainland China (Guangzhou) Entry:
- For Singapore and New Zealand passport holders, Guangzhou is eligible for the 144-hour visa-free transit
- Malaysian passport holders are generally eligible for the same 144-hour visa-free transit in Guangzhou, but it is essential to confirm based on the entry port and whether they are flying or arriving by train from Hong Kong.
- Key conditions for the 144-hour visa-free transit:
- You must enter and leave through designated ports (Baiyun Airport is fine).
- The stay is limited to designated regions (Guangzhou city and nearby areas).
- You must have onward tickets to a third country or region—returning to Hong Kong counts as exiting Mainland China and satisfies this requirement.
Travel Plan Considerations:
- Traveling from Hong Kong to Guangzhou for 2 days and returning to Hong Kong is allowed under the 144-hour visa-free transit, provided entry is at a qualifying port.
- Make sure to keep your onward or return tickets available for inspection at immigration in Guangzhou.
- Hotels in Guangzhou usually help with registration with local authorities, which is required within 24 hours of arrival.
Summary:
- Your plan of spending 2 days in Guangzhou and returning to Hong Kong is feasible for Singapore, Malaysia, and New Zealand passport holders under the 144-hour visa-free transit scheme.
- No separate Chinese visa is needed if all entry requirements are met.
- Always double-check that your point of entry and exit qualifies for the visa-free transit, especially if arriving from Hong Kong by train.
In short, your group can enjoy the short trip to Guangzhou and return to Hong Kong without applying for a standard visa, as long as the 144-hour transit rules are followed.
