Changing money
We will be staying at Voco Hotel and will probably arrive at about 5 or 6 pm on a Friday. Is there a money changer nearby and are they open at weekends or late evening. Thanks in advance fellow travelers
Arriving in Guangzhou around 5–6 pm on a Friday, you will still have several options for exchanging foreign currency near your hotel, Voco Hotel. Most hotels themselves offer currency exchange services, but rates may not be the best. For better rates, local banks and specialized money changers are preferable.
Nearby money changing options:
- Banks: Major banks such as Bank of China (中国银行) and ICBC (工商银行) have branches throughout Guangzhou, including near Zhujiang New Town where Voco Hotel is located. Many branches close around 5–6 pm on weekdays, so Friday evening may be tight, and weekends are usually closed.
- Currency Exchange Counters in Malls: Large shopping malls nearby like Taikoo Hui, Grandview Mall (天汇广场), and Tee Mall often have money changers or bank counters. Some of these remain open until 9–10 pm, even on weekends.
- Hotels: As mentioned, Voco Hotel may provide limited currency exchange for guests, usually at official bank rates. This is convenient for immediate cash needs on arrival.
Alternative options:
- Use ATMs that accept international cards (Visa, Mastercard) to withdraw RMB directly. ATMs are widely available and typically operate 24/7.
- If you have time during the weekend, you can exchange at banks the next morning, when services resume.
- Some foreign exchange services at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport remain open late and on weekends, so if convenient, you could also exchange a small amount upon arrival.
In summary, for a Friday evening arrival, your fastest option may be to use your hotel’s exchange service for immediate cash or withdraw from an international ATM. For better rates, consider visiting a bank or mall currency counter the next morning.
