Baiyun Airport wifi

My hotel wants confirmation of my landing at Baiyun to arrange pickup.

My question - can foreigners access airport Wi-Fi ?.

My experience shows no, as I don’t have a Chinese phone no.

Thanks

Yes, foreigners can access Wi-Fi at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, but there are some restrictions compared to Chinese residents.

Generally, the airport provides free Wi-Fi in terminals for all passengers, but registration is often required. For Chinese passengers, this is usually done via a mobile phone number and SMS verification. Foreigners without a Chinese phone may find it more challenging, but there are workarounds.

  • Option 1: Use Wi-Fi hotspots labeled "Baiyun Free WiFi" or similar. When prompted to register, try entering your international phone number; some users have reported success, although SMS verification may fail.
  • Option 2: Use a roaming mobile data plan from your home country. Many international SIM cards allow temporary data usage in China, which can be used to confirm your landing and communicate with your hotel.
  • Option 3: Some hotels and airport lounges provide free Wi-Fi access or vouchers for guests/passengers, bypassing the need for a Chinese number.

Additional tips:

  • If your hotel pickup relies on your confirmation, consider sending them an email before departure with your flight number and estimated landing time.
  • Alternatively, you can purchase a temporary Chinese SIM card at the airport arrival hall; this will allow access to Wi-Fi registration, local calls, and messaging apps.
  • Another practical solution is to rely on mobile apps that work offline or with limited connectivity until you can get reliable internet.

In summary, while foreigners can access airport Wi-Fi, it may require workarounds such as using roaming data, temporary SIM cards, or pre-arranged communication with your hotel.
