Itinerary Recs Requested!

Hi Fellow Travellers,

For those in the know, I would love to pick your brains about itinerary ideas. I (along with boyfriend) will be traveling into LIH for 3 nights on a Monday in November, arriving around noon. We'll be staying 10 minutes inland from Poipu Beach for 3 nights - with an afternoon departure back out of LIH. So, most of the afternoon and evening on arrival day, and a few hours ahead of check in on departure day. Then 2 full days in between.

Looking for suggestions of the best of the island in early November this year. We definitely want to kayak, so any suggestions for the best place/time for that is appreciated.

Is snorkeling good this time of year? Again any tips on when and where to go.

We also would like a hike but nothing too strenuous, 5-6 miles would be fine but I'm on vacation so nothing too crazy. I don't want to fall off any cliffs.

Would be willing to spring for one excursion if it were amazing. Something like Captain Andy's is tempting, but we are trying to keep to a budget.

Same goes with food, we have breakfast included and provably gonna eat simple but if there's some restaurant of food cart that we MUST stop at, please tell me.

Thanks in advance to anyone that has any nuggets of info to toss at me, I've also been grateful for out TA forum :)

Cheers and safe travels everybody.

With three nights near Poipu Beach and two full days in November on Kauai, you can enjoy a mix of water activities, scenic hikes, and local cuisine without feeling rushed. Early November is generally a good time for kayaking and snorkeling, though some northern beaches may have higher surf and currents. Staying on the south shore gives you calmer waters for beginners.

Arrival Day (Afternoon/Evening):

  • Check into your accommodation and settle in.
  • Take a short stroll along Poipu Beach or the nearby Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail for sunset views. It’s an easy walk with coastal scenery and minimal elevation.
  • Dinner options: Try Brennecke’s Beach Broiler or Puka Dog for a casual, local experience.

Day 1 – South Shore Exploration & Kayaking:

  • Kayaking: Consider the Wailua River on the east side. It’s calm, scenic, and perfect for a half-day excursion. Early morning is ideal to avoid crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures.
  • Snorkeling: Poipu Beach or Lawai Beach offer good visibility and are generally safe for casual snorkeling in November. You may see colorful reef fish and sea turtles.
  • Lunch: Grab a poke bowl or plate lunch at a local market, such as Pono Market or Island Fish & Chips.
  • Afternoon: Relax at the beach or explore nearby Spouting Horn and its coastal blowholes.
  • Dinner: Consider Keoki’s Paradise for casual dining with fresh seafood.

Day 2 – Scenic Drive & Hike:

  • Hike: Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail or the Kuilau Ridge Trail. Both are moderate, around 5-6 miles roundtrip, and offer lush forest views or coastal panoramas. No cliff-hanging risks, just scenic paths.
  • Optional Excursion: If your budget allows, a Napali Coast boat tour can be breathtaking. Captain Andy’s or Blue Dolphin are popular, but even one excursion like this is memorable.
  • Lunch: Take a break in Kapa’a or Hanalei for local cafes or food trucks.
  • Afternoon: Explore charming towns like Kapa’a or Hanapepe, enjoy local art galleries, or shop for souvenirs.
  • Dinner: The Beach House Restaurant in Poipu offers oceanfront views and great sunset dining.

Departure Day (Morning/Early Afternoon):

  • Early morning beach walk at Poipu or a short visit to Old Koloa Town for coffee and pastries.
  • Check out and head toward Lihue Airport with enough buffer time to enjoy the last glimpses of Kauai scenery.

In general, November offers calmer south shore waters, good snorkeling opportunities at Poipu Beach, and comfortable temperatures for hiking. Prioritize early morning or late afternoon for outdoor activities to avoid midday heat and possible rain showers. Local food carts and casual restaurants are plentiful, and carving out one special excursion, like a Napali Coast boat tour, will give you a memorable highlight without blowing the budget.
