Female senior need help for itinerary
Hi
I am a female senior with a bad knee who can't walk more than an hour and a half, can't cycle, can't climb and scare of height. It is my husband's dream to go to visit Yangshou.
My husband and I will stay in Yangshou for 2 full days in end March. We are thinking of hiring a driver to take us around.
1. Is Shiwai Taoyuan worth going? I read that it is a bit touristy and fake but the scenery looks rather nice.
2. Can we walk an hour in Ten Miles Gallery? Heard that we can only cycle there.
3. We will do the bamboo raft.
4. Silver Cave might be not for me because of too many steps and some said that it is slippery as well.
Can anybody suggest an itinerary for us? Thanks a lot.
Yangshuo is beautiful and there are several ways to enjoy its scenery without strenuous walking or cycling. Given your limitations, a private driver is an excellent idea, as it allows you to explore comfortably and at your own pace.
Regarding your specific questions:
- Shiwai Taoyuan: This area is indeed designed for tourists, and some may find it a bit artificial. However, the scenery is gentle and beautiful, with water features, bridges, and limestone karst views. Since it is mostly flat and easily accessible by car, it can be worth a short visit for photos and light strolling without any strenuous activity.
- Ten Miles Gallery: This scenic road is best known for cycling, but there are sections you can walk along, especially if you have a driver to drop you off and pick you up at specific points. Walking an hour is feasible on the flatter sections, but avoid steep or narrow paths.
- Bamboo Raft on the Yulong River: This is a perfect activity for you. The raft rides are slow, peaceful, and offer stunning views of the karst mountains. It requires minimal physical effort and is safe for seniors with mobility issues.
- Silver Cave: As you suspected, it involves many steps and slippery paths. If your knee is sensitive and you are worried about safety, it may be best to skip it or just enjoy the entrance area without going deep inside.
Suggested 2-day itinerary for a senior-friendly visit:
- Day 1:
- Hire a driver for a scenic drive around Yangshuo countryside.
- Visit Shiwai Taoyuan for photos and a short, easy walk.
- Drive along the Ten Miles Gallery road and stop at a few scenic points for gentle walks or photo opportunities.
- Lunch in a local restaurant along the route.
- Late afternoon bamboo raft ride on Yulong River.
- Return to Yangshuo town for a relaxed evening.
- Day 2:
- Visit Moon Hill (optional, but just viewing from the base without climbing is fine).
- Drive through nearby villages and rice paddies for scenic photography.
- Leisurely lunch and explore Yangshuo town at your own pace.
- Optional: watch an evening light show or cultural performance in town if energy allows.
Additional tips:
- Always wear comfortable shoes with good grip.
- Bring a small foldable seat or walking stick if needed for rest stops.
- Hydrate frequently and avoid peak sun hours.
- Let the driver plan the stops so that walking distances are minimal.
With this itinerary, you can enjoy the beauty of Yangshuo without overexerting yourself, and your husband can still experience the highlights comfortably.
