Good beaches around the villages?

I'm going to visit my mom in the villages in a few weeks and I was hoping to find a beach to go to for a few days from there? I know Daytona is close but my sister recently went there with her family and has strongly recommended against it. Was hoping someone might have a nice experience with a different beach?

any help would be greatly appreciated we are going the end of March

The Villages are nicely situated in Central Florida, so you have several options for reaching the Atlantic or Gulf Coast beaches within a reasonable drive. Since your sister didn’t recommend Daytona Beach, there are alternative beaches that many visitors find more relaxed, cleaner, and enjoyable, especially for a March visit.

Here are some recommended beaches to consider:

  • New Smyrna Beach — About 1 hour 45 minutes from The Villages, this beach is known for its wide, soft sand and a more laid-back vibe compared to Daytona. It’s great for strolling, sunbathing, and even casual surfing. The town has charming shops and restaurants, making it a pleasant day trip or overnight stay.
  • Canaveral National Seashore — Approximately 2 hours away, this area offers pristine, undeveloped beaches. Perfect if you want fewer crowds and a more natural experience. Wildlife viewing is excellent here, and it’s ideal for walking, shell collecting, or just relaxing in nature.
  • Cocoa Beach — Around 2 hours from The Villages, Cocoa Beach is a classic Florida beach town. While a bit more touristy, it has a fun vibe, good restaurants, and is famous for surfing. It’s an easy choice for a full day or a weekend getaway.
  • St. Augustine Beach — Roughly 2 hours 15 minutes drive, St. Augustine Beach offers soft sand and a quieter atmosphere than Daytona. You can combine the beach with a visit to historic St. Augustine for sightseeing, dining, and shopping.
  • Fort De Soto Park (Gulf Coast) — If you’re open to driving a bit further (about 3.5 to 4 hours), Fort De Soto near St. Petersburg is a Gulf Coast gem. It has white sand beaches, calm waters, excellent facilities, and is consistently ranked among the best family-friendly beaches in Florida.

Tips for your trip in late March:

  • The weather should be mild, but the water may still be cool for swimming, so beach activities like walking, sunbathing, and shell collecting are great options.
  • Arrive early to avoid crowds, especially on weekends, as some beaches like New Smyrna and Cocoa Beach can get busy even outside peak summer season.
  • Consider staying overnight if you want a more relaxed pace instead of doing a long day trip.

In summary, if you want a more peaceful, less crowded experience than Daytona Beach, New Smyrna, Canaveral National Seashore, and St. Augustine Beach are excellent choices within a 2-2.5 hour drive. If you’re willing to drive further, Fort De Soto on the Gulf Coast is worth it for a stunning beach day or two. Each offers a slightly different vibe, so you can pick based on whether you want more nature, historic charm, or tourist-friendly amenities.
