A Quiet Walk Through Time: Penglipuran Village, Bali

In the heart of Bali lies a small village nestled amidst lush bamboo forests—Penglipuran Village. It is a place where time seems to stand still, preserving the traces of traditional Balinese life.
The houses here are neatly arranged, with a stone-paved road running through the center of the village, leading up to a hill. Each house faces a direction aligned with cosmological beliefs, following the principles of Tri Hita Karana, or "the three balances"—harmony between God, humans, and the environment. This is not merely a concept but a way of life woven into every brick, every carved detail, and every functional space.
Legend has it that the people of Penglipuran migrated from Mount Kintamani hundreds of years ago, bringing their beliefs and way of life with them. They established this village based on the principles of Asta Kosala Kosali—an ancient Balinese architectural science that dictates the placement of every structure in harmony with the universe and natural forces.
The name "Penglipuran" itself carries profound meaning, derived from the term "Pengeling Pura," which translates to "remembrance of ancestors." The village was designed as a place of memory, worship, and preservation of the will of those who have passed.
Despite the rapid changes in the outside world, Penglipuran has remarkably maintained its traditional way of life. Every house still has a small shrine within its yard, families continue to perform daily religious rituals, and most notably, the village stands as one of Indonesia's few plastic-free communities—a testament to how ancient roots can coexist with modern environmental conservation.
Walking along the stone-paved road through the village, one not only sees the beautiful houses lined up but also hears the echoes of the past, telling stories of faith, unity, and humanity's effort to live in balance with the world.
