[Yonghe Temple | Red Walls and Golden Tiles in Beijing]
Walking into the Yonghe Temple in Beijing's Dongcheng District, time seems to slow down. Red walls and golden tiles reflect the azure sky, and curls of incense smoke rise from the air, emanating a solemn and tranquil atmosphere. This is not only the largest and best-preserved Tibetan Buddhist temple in Beijing, but also a microcosm of the intertwined history and faith of the ancient capital.
🌸 Architecture and Atmosphere
The five courtyards are centered on a solemn axis, and the glazed tiles gleam golden in the sunlight. The palace-like architecture blends Han, Manchu, and Tibetan elements, and the wooden beams and pillars exude an air of age. Walking through the temples, the sounds of wooden fish and chanting fill the air, and the solemnity washes over you.
📍 Don't Miss
• Great Buddha Hall: Enshrining an 18-meter-tall Maitreya Buddha carved from a single log of sandalwood, it stands tall and majestic, considered the world's largest.
• Yonghe Gate: The vibrant paintings and symmetrical layout reveal the rules of an imperial temple. • Wanfu Pavilion: Prayer flags and Buddha statues are scattered throughout the temple, and every step bears the devout devotion of the faithful.
✨ Travel Tips
• Opening Hours: Usually open in the morning, crowds increase in the afternoon, so it's recommended to visit early in the morning to enjoy the quiet atmosphere.
• Transportation: Directly accessible via the Lama Temple subway station, and within walking distance.
• Tips: Photography is prohibited inside the temple. Due to the high incense burning, it's advisable to dress modestly as a sign of respect.
