Symbols of Hakka Culture — Boke Lou and Wufeng Lou in Luodai

Nestled in Luodai Ancient Town, just outside Chengdu, are two remarkable landmarks that reflect both the richness of Hakka culture and the town’s deep historical roots — Boke Lou and Wufeng Lou.


Wufeng Lou, also called Fengyi Pavilion, stands as one of Luodai’s most distinctive icons. Local legend traces its origins to the Three Kingdoms era, when the Shu Han royal family frequented the area. It is said the pavilion was originally built as a retreat for Empress Gan, mother of Emperor Liu Shan. Today’s structure is a careful reconstruction, soaring more than 23 meters high across three stories. Its defining feature is the profusion of phoenix motifs — thousands of intricately carved and painted designs that adorn its beams, pillars, and windows. In Chinese tradition, the phoenix symbolizes wealth, nobility, and protection, making the pavilion both culturally meaningful and visually captivating.


In contrast, Boke Lou takes inspiration from the classic tulou — the circular, fortified communal residences of the Hakka people. Now repurposed as the Hakka Family Tradition Hall, it houses exhibitions that explore Hakka heritage, from ancestral teachings and clan records to migration history. Spread over four floors, the building combines cultural education with striking architecture, offering visitors an immersive experience of Hakka values such as unity, security, and family bonds. Its enclosed circular form vividly expresses these communal ideals.


Travel Tips: Visit during the daytime to admire the architectural details, while late afternoon or sunset provides softer light and a quieter atmosphere. For photography, Wufeng Lou is best captured from the square or across nearby water, where its reflection enhances the shot. At Boke Lou, wide exterior shots highlight its tulou-inspired form, while inside, views from the upper floors are perfect for showcasing the dramatic interior design.
