Within the ancient city of Chiang Mai, there are several large-scale temples. Besides Wat Phra Singh near the weekend night market, Wat Chedi Luang is the most popular. It combines three distinct styles of temples: Lanna, Indian, and Sri Lankan, which were later merged to form the current Wat Chedi Luang, also known as the 'Temple of the Great Stupa.' It is the most famous among the six major temples in Chiang Mai.
In the temple complex of Wat Chedi Luang, the central structure is a Lanna-style square stupa with a pointed top, primarily built with stone and stucco. It is adorned with ceramic and bronze sculptures and has a history of over 600 years. It is the tallest and most revered temple structure in the ancient city of Chiang Mai.
Admission requires a ticket, priced at 50 THB for adults. At the entrance, there is a sacred tree, a towering and majestic Dipterocarpus tree that is over a hundred years old. Other notable attractions within Wat Chedi Luang include the city pillar, the great stupa, and the reclining Buddha, all of which are worth seeing.
