Wat Chet Yot, Chiang Mai
Wat Chet Yot is located in Chang Phueak Subdistrict on the Superhighway (Chiang Mai-Lampang). It is one of Chiang Mai's most important and ancient temples.
Similar to the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya in India, the base of the chedi is decorated with stucco deities. The exterior of the chedi is adorned with stucco deities, both seated and standing, dressed in various decorative patterns.
The Chedi of King Tilokarat is worth seeing. When King Tilokarat passed away in 2030, his grandson, Phra Yot Chiang Rai, succeeded him and commissioned the construction of a large stupa to enshrine the ashes of his grandfather. These later became the Satta Maha Sathan, representing seven important sites in the life of the Buddha: the Bodhi Throne, the Animit Chedi, the Ratanajongkrom Chedi, the Ratanaghara Chedi, the Ajapalanigrod Chedi, the Rajayatan Chedi. Today, only three remain at Wat Chedi: Animit Chedi, Rattanaghara Chedi, and Mucalinda Chedi. It was also the site of the 8th world Buddhist Council (the first in Thailand) and a major practice for monks in Lanna. Wat Chedi is therefore a temple of immense historical significance. The architecture within the temple is magnificent and worthy of reverence and a visit.
