🏘Wat Chet Yot is a third-class royal temple, originally named Wat Photharam Mahawihan. It is believed to have been built between the 8th and 12th centuries by Indian craftsmen and further decorated in 1455 during the reign of King Tilokarat.
🧱Constructed of laterite, it features seven spires and is decorated with stucco deities all around.
📚In 1477, Wat Photharam Mahawihan was the site of the 8th World Buddhist Council. In 1935, it was declared a national historic site.
Highlights of the temple include:
🛕The chedi, constructed of laterite and decorated with stucco, imitating the Mahabodhi Temple in India. Inside, there is a deep tunnel leading into the viharn (ordination hall). Inside, there is Luang Pho Yai, a stucco Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya posture.
🏠The royal viharn houses many sacred objects, including the principal Buddha image and a wax figure of Somdej Phra Buddhacarya Toh. Sarapat Nuek Glass, etc.
🛕 Chedi Phra Chao Tilokarat, the place where the royal ashes of Phra Chao Tilokarat are enshrined.
🎄 A pavilion, an ancient stupa, and a Bodhi tree.
🐍According to Lanna beliefs, Wat Chet Yot is also the temple for those born in the Year of the Snake.
