The Origin of Buddhism in Kyushu
Tochoji Temple is the oldest and most valuable temple in Kyushu, having been built in 806 AD (Oh my god!!! Oh my god... so old 🙏🏻) and was also the family temple of the Kuroda clan, the rulers of Fukuoka during the Edo period (so amazing!!! 👍🏻)
This temple plays an important role in local history and blends culture, art, and Buddhism all in one place (thank you 🙏🏻)
⛩️ Tochoji Temple: Another must-see spot is the red five-story pagoda 🔺, another architecturally stunning landmark!!! The bright red structure stands out against the distant sky, making it a stunning photo opportunity.
There's also the largest wooden Buddha statue in Japan, the Fukuoka Daibutsu ("Fukuoka's Giant Buddha"), which stands 10.8 meters tall, weighs 30 tons, and is made entirely of wood. It took over four years to build.
We didn't get to see the statue, as we were in a hurry to get going. (I'll definitely have to check it out next time! 🫣)
