Nestled in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau at an altitude of over 3,200 meters, Qinghai Lake is a vast expanse of blue water. In ancient times, it was known as the "Western Sea," a place where the Qiang, Tuyuhun, and Tibetan peoples lived by following water and grass.
Qinghai Lake was formed over 2 million years ago due to tectonic movements. Originally an outflowing river, it became a closed lake as mountain ranges rose. Over time, the lake's salinity increased, making it the largest inland saltwater lake in China. Historically, Qinghai Lake was a crucial passage on the Silk Road and the ancient Tang-Tibet route, leaving behind numerous ancient rock paintings and sacrificial sites. Since the 1950s, the government has established protected areas, and today it is a national nature reserve and an internationally significant wetland.
The scenery around the lake varies greatly. In spring and summer, the lakeside is adorned with blooming rapeseed flowers, creating a stunning contrast of golden yellow against the deep blue waters. The lake features five small islands, with Haixin Mountain and Bird Island being the most famous. Every spring, tens of thousands of migratory birds, including bar-headed geese and cormorants, gather here, creating the spectacular "Bird Island Phenomenon." The sunsets on the western shore and sunrises on the eastern shore are breathtaking, with sunlight reflecting off the lake's surface as if the entire lake is ablaze.
The residents around Qinghai Lake are primarily Tibetan and Hui people, whose lives are closely intertwined with the lake. Tibetan herder Cairang's family has lived by the lake for generations. He often says, "Qinghai Lake is our mother; she nourishes our cattle and sheep, and she nourishes our souls." Every summer, Cairang participates in traditional sea-worship ceremonies, praying for favorable weather. Meanwhile, Hui elder Master Ma runs a small shop by the lake, handcrafting yak yogurt. Visitors often say his yogurt carries the "taste of Qinghai Lake."
A visit to Qinghai Lake is incomplete without sampling the local delicacies. Yak yogurt is thick and sweet, naturally fermented from highland yak milk. Hand-grabbed lamb is tender and juicy, best enjoyed with a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Other traditional Tibetan dishes like Qinghai old yogurt, tsampa, and butter tea offer an authentic taste of the plateau. The lake's native Huang fish, now protected from fishing, was once a local specialty, and artificial breeding efforts are now preserving this species.
