Embrace the Majestic Trees Along the Smangus Sacred Trees Trail

Smangus Village, located in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County, is a renowned high-altitude settlement of Taiwan's indigenous Atayal people. Once known as the "Black Village" for being the last village in Taiwan to receive electricity, it is also referred to as the "Village Forgotten by God," highlighting its remote mountain location.

Perhaps due to its inaccessibility and slower development, the village has preserved a secluded and pristine charm. In addition to the beauty of Atayal culture and the breathtaking sacred trees, the area is home to various native Taiwanese cherry blossoms, including Yaezakura, Yoshino cherry, and Wushe cherry. During cherry blossom season, the village becomes a bustling destination!

Walking along the Smangus Sacred Trees Trail, the scent of cypress and the pristine aroma of the forest fill the air. On the way back, a visit to the church and the village's elementary school reveals a touch of solitude and desolation, perhaps a reflection of the declining birthrate.
