Fanjingshan is one of the most revered Buddhist mountains in China and is considered the bodhimaṇḍa (place of enlightenment) of Maitreya Buddha — the Buddha of the future.

Buddhism has flourished here since the Tang Dynasty (618–907).

Pilgrims come to pray, meditate, and climb the mountain as a spiritual journey toward purity and enlightenment.
