Lishui Tour | Xiandu Yandang Study Room b

Yandang Study Room is a unique cultural space located within the Xiandu Scenic Area in Lishui, transformed from an abandoned quarry. It blends natural landscapes with modern design and has been selected as one of China's top ten best-built architectures. It has now become a popular check-in spot and a place for reading and relaxation.
*Location:
Yandang Study Room is located at No. 8 Yandang, Xiandu Scenic Area, Jinyun County, Lishui City, Zhejiang Province.
*History and Culture:
Yandang Study Room was originally an abandoned tuff quarry from the Song to Qing dynasties (locally called "Yandang"). After renovation, it has become a public space integrating reading, cultural display, and leisure.
*Design Features:
① Architectural Structure: With a clear height of 38 meters and a depth of about 50 meters, the top is completely open, creating a naturally lit open-air space. The original rock walls are preserved, incorporating modern design elements through a zigzag stone path (about 20 meters long), stepped stone platforms, and bamboo nanmu bookshelves.
② Functional Zones: It includes a book reading area (featuring local Jinyun literature and popular books), a Himalaya audio book listening area, and a self-service borrowing system (supporting interlibrary loans within Zhejiang Province). The "Xixiaoyankai" café offers coffee drinks and a leisure space.
*Recommended Photo Check-in Spots:
① Entrance and Rock Formation Area
a. Entrance: Upon entering Yandang Study Room, you will see unique rock formations. Using them as a background, whether for full-body shots or close-ups, you can capture a natural and cultural fusion.
b. Light and Shadow in Rock Crevices: Sunlight filters through the rock crevices, creating unique light and shadow effects. Standing in the light and shadow for photos highlights the subject’s outline and adds depth and artistic flair to the pictures.
② Bookshelf Area
a. Beside the Bookshelves: Walk up the zigzag stone path to reach rows of bookshelves. Choose a bookshelf full of books as the background, stand beside it pretending to read or hold a book, and you’ll get photos full of literary charm.
b. Intersection of Steps and Bookshelves: The steps and bookshelves intertwine. Shooting from below looking up can show spatial layers and depth, with the subject standing on the steps as if ascending the ladder of knowledge.
③ Coffee Area
a. Outdoor Coffee Seats: Order a coffee and sit in the open-air coffee area, with rocks behind and beautiful scenery ahead. Using the surrounding natural landscape and rock architecture as the background, take close-up or full-body shots to maximize the atmosphere.
b. Coffee Bar: The bar is decorated with various coffee tools and ornaments. Using the bar as a background, shoot scenes of making coffee or holding a cup to add a lively touch to the photos.
④ Terrace and Viewing Platform
a. Left Path Terrace: There is a less crowded terrace accessible via a small path on the left side of Yandang Study Room. Here you can shoot from an overhead staggered perspective, capturing the internal structure and visitors of the study room.
b. Opposite Walkway Small Book House: Shooting from the small book house on the walkway opposite Yandang Study Room allows you to capture the full view of the study room and the surrounding mountain and water scenery, resulting in wide and magnificent photos.
⑤ Other Unique Spots
a. "One Line Sky" Perspective: Look up at the narrow strip of sky overhead, with sunlight streaming through the gap. Using the blue sky and rock crevices as the background, shoot a person gazing upward to reflect the grandeur of nature and the smallness of humans.
b. Beside the Lonely Tree: There is a solitary tree inside the study room, beautifully lit by light and shadow. Using this tree as a background, shoot scenes of a person leaning against it or reading in front of it to create a peaceful and beautiful atmosphere.
*Cultural Experience:
① Historical Origin: The history of tuff mining in Jinyun County dates back to the Song Dynasty. The study room renovation continues the quarrying heritage while giving it new cultural life.
② Touring Experience: Visitors can experience the natural wonder of changing light and shadow (such as the Tyndall effect), combined with reading, photography, or participating in cultural activities. It is praised as the "Little Dunhuang of the South" and the "Cave Book."
