Water and Fire Tenmangu Shrine: A Hidden Gem for Cherry Blossoms in Kyoto

Water and Fire Tenmangu Shrine, located in Kyoto's Kamigyo Ward, may appear unassuming at first glance, but it holds the distinction of being Japan's first Tenmangu Shrine. Dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning, it is also known as one of the "Kyoto Eight Shrines." This shrine is a well-kept secret among locals as a prime spot for cherry blossom viewing and has been selected as one of the "Kyoto Cherry Blossom Top 100 Hidden Spots." It is particularly famous for its stunning weeping cherry trees, which bloom in a dazzling display.

Though small in size, the shrine boasts two magnificent weeping cherry trees at its center—one pink and one white. When in full bloom, these trees transform the surroundings into a romantic spectacle. The combination of blue skies, white clouds, and the ancient shrine creates an almost dreamlike atmosphere. Moreover, the area is quiet and serene, offering the refined elegance of Kyoto without the overwhelming crowds of tourists, making it a truly pleasant experience.

To visit, take City Bus No. 9 heading toward Nishigamo Depot and get off at the Tenjin Park stop. While you're in the area, consider exploring nearby Honryuji Temple and Myorenji Temple, both of which also feature beautiful floral displays.
