Located a short distance from the hustle and bustle of Gion, Kenninji Temple is Kyoto's oldest Zen temple.
It's a popular spot known for Tawaraya Sotatsu's "Wind Gods and Thunder Gods" folding screen and the stunning ceiling painting, "Twin Dragons."
The moment you step inside the temple grounds, you're greeted by a sense of tranquility and orderly beauty.
In the "Chion Garden," the geometric beauty of the white sand, moss, and stones will soothe your soul,
and in the "Daiyuen Garden," gazing at the dry landscape garden from inside the building is a sheer luxury.
The "Twin Dragons" painting on the ceiling of the Hatto (Lecture Hall) is a powerful piece of art.
Painted by Junsaku Koizumi in 2002, the image of a swaying dragon looking down on a canvas of approximately 108 tatami mats is a stunning sight.
The temple's convenient location, just a short walk from Gion and Hanamikoji Street, makes it an easy place to incorporate into your Kyoto sightseeing itinerary.
