Okayama City: A Day of Enjoying the Tramway in a City Where History and Modernity Intersect
📍 Miki Memorial Hall, AEON Mall Okayama, Omotemachi Shopping Street
Okayama City is a fascinating city where trams are integrated into the city's culture and daily life. This time, we spent the day touring the surrounding area, focusing on a classical concert at Miki Memorial Hall.
🎼 Miki Memorial Hall
This hall, adjacent to Okayama University Hospital, is a little-known institution established with the aim of combining medicine and music. Though medium-sized, it boasts excellent acoustics and hosts numerous classical music and lectures. This time, we attended a recital by a pianist from Okayama. We enjoyed a comfortable performance in a warm and inviting space.
🍜 Hishioya (Soy Sauce Shop) @ AEON Mall Okayama
After the concert, we headed straight to the restaurant area at AEON Mall Okayama. At Hishioya, a popular ramen shop serving local miso and soy sauce, I ordered the "Aged Soy Sauce Ramen," packed with the delicious flavors of seafood and chicken bones. It was rich yet clean, and I drank every last drop of the soup!
🛍 Strolling Through Omotemachi Shopping Street
The Showa-era atmosphere of Omotemachi Shopping Street is about a 10-minute streetcar ride from AEON. Lined with secondhand bookstores, Japanese confectionery shops, and general stores beloved by locals, it's a fun area to stroll through. Pick up some Ote Manju, a specialty Okayama confection, as a souvenir.
🚋 Get a Retro Feel on the Streetcar
The Okayama Electric Tram is a convenient way to get around Okayama. Starting at just 100 yen, you can easily travel around the city, and the train itself has become a tourist attraction. Enjoy the retro cityscape from the window, as well as easy access to Okayama Castle and Korakuen Garden.

💡Travel Tips:
・Check the Okayama University website for events at Miki Memorial Hall
・The Aeon food court can get crowded, so it's best to go at a different time.
・Be careful, as some stores in the shopping district only accept cash.
